Port area in Nice

Going to Nice in June. Our usual apartment is not available. Would you stay in the port area? Do you think it's too far from old town? We like to walk but is the bus service ok there?

Anyone?

Hi Micheline
We walked from the old town to the port - a lovely stroll around the headland took around 20 minutes.
We had planned to take the bus back but ended up walking both ways. You can also go up and over the hill as a more energetic alternative.

From memory the bus service to the port was not as frequent as those around the main city area. You can look at the timetables on line if you google Nice bus service, I think. Di

I would consider the Port to be quite close to Old Town for those who like to walk (from the "northern" end of the port, the walk to Place Garibaldi is just a couple of blocks along Rue Cassini).

Place Garibaldi forms the northern boundary of Old Town, and there is a major stop for buses on a street just off the "Place" - we walked here to pick up buses headed to the east of Nice, such as Eze and Monaco(bus schedules at www.lignesdazur.com ).

We really like Place Garibaldi for its cafes and people watching, and found ourselves walking there and to Old Town from the Carre d'Or area nearly daily during last year's 2 week stay.

Have a great trip!

I would do it. It seems like you always see a bus there; there are multiple lines and they run frequently; most will either take you to the center or to the tram line (the tickets are good for bus and tram; day ticket is the easiest). It's a pleasant enough area. Don't miss Chez Pipo for the best socca in Nice: http://www.davidlebovitz.com/2008/06/the-best-socca/

I'll soon be asking advice selecting an apartment. It's upsetting that some of them want 30 euros for linens for one week.

You can walk along the promenade at the water to the port. I've done it hundreds of times. You can also take the tram to Old Town. You get it at Place Garibaldi. I prefer to stay closer to Ave. Jean Medicine, but the port area is not bad at all.

I do love the walk along the promenade. Still undecided.

Finally chose a flat but not in the port. It is on Massena. Check it out - Homeaway.co.uk. Property 496385. It might be noisy but that balcony called to us. Next time the port.
