Pompidou Museum---partially open?

We would like to visit The Pompidou on Mon. June 23rd. It seems that it is only partially open. Do you think it's worth the effort? Is there enough to see along with the view?

We've been there before and now want to take our 13 yr. old GD.

Thanks for starting this thread, hope you get some answers.

I did not know it was not fully open as we are also planning to go there. Thus will wait with you for some answers. I read that it is a beautiful place thus excited to visit it.

Have a safe journey and tons of fun with your grand daughter. What great memories you two will make!

I like modern art and have been there several times, so I'd just base my opinion on what was closed and how important that was to me. Don't they tell you which sections? I can't find it online on their website but have heard that it is most of their permanent collection of major works, and if so, I would not think it worth it unless you get in free, of course.

From comments in an April review on TA only the 5th floor is open. Not sure about the 4th floor

Pompidou Centre itself has free entry - only the Modern Art Museum I believe charges - if you can take the exterior elevators to the top/roof for a sweet view over Paris - kids that age will love the long series of escalators on the outside of the building - if those are running - and free.

Museum and exhibitions
11am-9pm every day except Tuesdays

As from Wednesday 9 April
CLOSURE OF MUSEUM LEVEL 4 (CONTEMPORARY COLLECTIONS)
Museum Level 5, exhibiting the Modern collections, will remain open

As from Wednesday 2 July
REOPENING OF MUSEUM LEVEL 4 (CONTEMPORARY COLLECTIONS)
With the new presentation "Une histoire : art, architecture et design des années 1980 à nos jours"

So all of the building is open except the 4th floor - Contemporary Art Museum - probably the part of the building that is the least interesting - but the whole rest of the unique building is open - the vast library and always some special free exhibition, often aimed at younger folk.

So definitely keep the Pompidou Centre on your list even if one floor is closed.

this should have said "least interesting to a typical 13-year-old" not in general.

I go there exclusively for the modern art museum.

What I am saying is that the building itself is a work of art - once you've seen it you may not go there for the experience of seeing it - with or without the Art Museum the building to me is a must sight in Paris for tourists.

I agree with PalenQ. We were in the neighborhood last month and it was great to stop in, escalator to the top and enjoy the view.

Christina May 10th, 2014 09:34 AM

I don't think the building is beautiful on the inside, the rooms are just big empty blocks, I don't get why anyone would think that anything special. No tourist is going to go there for the library. I think it is better appreciated from the outside, actually, but some people might enjoy going up the escalators for the view.

PalenQ May 11th, 2014 06:57 AM

No the building's novelty is not inside but the exteriro and the multi escalators taking you to one of Paris' premier vistas.

Plus there are often special exhibitions on the lower levels that are free - always go inside just to see what they may be.
