Pompeii vs. Ercolano

When looking for sites that show the living conditions of Roman towns, do travellers recommend seeing Ercolano (Herculaneum) over Pompeii, or are both must-sees? Going next week and would like to plan accordingly.

My experience was that there were far fewer tourists at Herculaneum, which made for a better experience.

And more to your question, I found Herculaneum to be more intact then most of Pompeii, which gave me a better understanding of how the people lived.

But whichever you choose, try to also get to Oplontis, which has colorful wall paintings in wonderful condition. It's near both Pompeii and Herculaneum; just a short walk from the Torre Annunziata stop on the Circumvesuviana line.
