Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day?
We're going with a small group to Naples/Amalfi Coast in Sept. Our last day is a morning at Pompeii and then the group returns to Naples. We don't leave Italy til the next day and are considering leaving the tour and seeing Herculaneum in the afternoon. It would mean spending a couple hundred euro more for transportation, a tour and returning to Naples on our own in the evening. Is it worth it? Is it even wise to try to do both in one day? Is it enough to see Pompeii to get a sense of the history and archeology? Thanks!!

Hi Bargem - Why would it cost you a couple of hundred euro more?
Pompeii-Herculaneum-Naples costs about € 3 by train ... Steve |
Ercolano is about 15 mins. on the circumvesuvian train from Pompeii on the way to Naples. It's about 5 blocks (.5 miles) down from the train station. Then take the train, about 30 mins. to Naples.

I'm visiting Italy next week, and our plan is to visit both Pompeii and Herculaneum on the same day. We will be based out of Sorrento, and the CV train is our transport.

bargem,
Check to see what time the Herculaneum ruins close for the day. After going to Pompeii and up to Vesuvius, we took the train to Ercolano and were disappointed to find that the Herculaneum ruins had already closed. I can't remember what the closing time was, and my guidebook is out on loan, this is something that should be easy to check. Byrd |
I did both in one day. All you need is transportation from Pompeii to Herculaneum ... and then from Herculaneum back to your hotel. (Maybe you can even get a few others from your group who'd be interested in seeing Herculaneum... if you had enough, bet you could convince your tour leader to have the bus drop your mini-group off).
