Pompeii

We are going to be in Rome for a week early next month and were planning on a trip to see Pompeii. Since it seems like this would involve too much time for a day trip, we were thinking of staying in Naples for a day or two (my boyfriend has been to Rome before and wanted to see an area further south as well). I’ve read a lot lately about all the problems going on in Naples, and feel a bit uncomfortable staying there, so I was wondering if there was another area that would be accessible from Rome and to Pompeii (using public transportation). If this is not possible, are there other areas that would be nice to visit this time of year where we could stay for a night or two?
Thanks.

Sorrento is just as convenient, but if your boyfriend is also interested in areas further south, check out Salerno.

Even though you are not staying Napoli, going to the archeology museum there really adds to your understanding of the beauty and wealth of Pompeii. All the best mosaics and frescoes are displayed there for safekeeping.

Napoli is an extraordinary city. I don't know what you've been reading, but the periodic bloodlettings that capture a lot of headlines (prompt internet chatter) are wars among organized crimes groups, similar to the Mafia. Staying near the port (which is the main tourist area) is comparable to staying in New York City or Washington DC.

You'll be fine in Napoli -stay in the area around the port. You must visit the Archaeological Museum before going to Pompeii - it really helps you appreciate what you see. Take the Circumvesuviana train from Napoli to Pompeii- separate line from main station.
Have fun

Stayed in Sorrento on Amalfi Peninsula last year, Intercity train from Rome to Naples, local 1hr to Sorrento, Pompeii halfway. train to Pompeii some time before lunch will give you a whole day of walking around. I had 4 hrs at Pompeii Scavi, stopped on the way from napoli, left luggage at served locker at the site, then on to Sorrento, arriving early evening. Could have been there longer, depends on how interested you are in archeology. Th hrhttp://www.trenitalia.it/en/index.html
for trains to Napoli. Local is Circumvesuviana, make a google.

I actually think seeing the archeological museum after Pompeii is the way to go -- but appareently either way is good!

But if one confines one's stay to the port area don't they miss an essential part of Naples? Just asking cause I am considering a visit this winter from Rome...will not mention article in today's New York Times on subject of crime in the city.
