Pompei Tour Guides

I need information regarding guided tours of Pompei. Should I make reservations prior to our departure or would it be ok to wait until we arrive there. The problem with making reservations ahead of time is not knowing the exact time that we would be arriving. The ship arrives in port at 7:00 a.m., but I don't know how long it would be before we got off the ship and arrived at Pompei. Also, can anyone recommend tour guides for Pompei?

There are guides that are waiting at the gate. They gather groups together for 1-2 hour tours. (my only recommendation is dont get the audio tour).

Hi Lolli -

Have been to Pompeii twice. As previous poster has mentioned, just show up and there will be a number of guides milling around trying to pull together groups of people for tours.

We went in both September and October and had no problems with joining a tour both times. I think we paid around 10 euro each for the tour - a bargain considering the information we gleaned from our guides.

And you need a guide or at least a guidebook or else you may just think of it as a pile of old ruins. guides yes make the stones come alive and tell their tales.

Thank you PalQ, Hana, and Steviegene for your recommendations and comments.

Steviegene, What didn't you like about the audioguide?

Most posters seem to recommend it (myself included).

Although I have read of a few posters having problems following the map to the listed sites.

The guide IIRC offers a 2, 4 and 6hr tour of the ruins.
Regards, Walter
