Pomeii Day trip from Rome

We plan to take one full day to visit Pompeii from Rome. Can you suggest a good tour (that doesn't take you to a lot of other stops), or a good personal driver? Can we really do it by train without too much stress? This is my wife's number one wish for this trip so we want to have a good bit of time there. We are in good health and walk about 3 miles each day when at home and more when we travel.

Errr...I am not sure that Pompeii is a day trip from Rome. That is if you intend to do..Rome, Pompeii, Rome in one day. It IS a day trip from Naples.

Enjoy Rome has a tour to Pompeii and I don't think they stop at other places.

You could take the train too without too much stress, you change trains in Naples to the circumvesuviana and exit at Pompeii scavi.

Have you got the time to spend the night in Pompeii? It's bigger than most people ever imagine. It really is a small Italian city. Just without people.

If you can't spend the night, but have the scratch, consider having a car meet you at the Naples train station, then drive you to Ercolanum, then to Pompeii. You can get back to the Naples train via local train, or be picked up again by car.

Check out Benvenuto Limousines. They are very reliable.

We took a daytrip from Rome to Pompeii a few years ago and everything went great. Sure, its a long day but it was easy to get to and definitely worth it if you are interested in Pompeii. We took the train and it was very easy. Simply take the train down to Naples, switch to the Circumvesuviana from Naples Central Station, and get off at the Pompeii Scavi station. We took an early train, got to Pompeii around 10:30, spent about 5 hours there, and were back in Rome for dinner.

We did it with no problem I have a excellent drivers name we did Pompeii, Herculaneum (spelling), had lunch in Sorrento and then Naples Archeology museum, late afternoon back in Rome by 9pm.
Its a long day but worth the extra bucks for a driver who goes where you want to go.
Cost 4 of us 100e a head plus service was so super we gave him a 50e tip. Bus tours start at about 125e each. I think 4 hours at Pompeii is enough you get burned out. Skip the Art-Card its not worth the hassle its quicker to just pay the entry fees to where you want to go. The staff at the Archeology museum
Is quite rude and could care less to give you any information. As for the secret room go up the stairs, at the first landing turn left go up a few more stairs and there it is no big deal just walk right in.

Two people can do the trip by train and Circumvesuviana from Naples in about three hours (each way)and 140 euro round trip. I have done it by train and it was not strenuous.

In April, we will again be visiting Pompeii from Rome, but this time we wanted to be lazy and take a driver from Rome to Naples, see the museum, visit Pompeii, and then return to Rome. With necessary meal stops, of course.

Much to my surprise the most reasonable (and highly recommended) company was Renato Cuomo's in Sorrento. Although he lives south of Pompeii, he still gave a better rate 600 euro for six people) than the companies in Rome I contacted. Do a search on this board and you'll read plenty of good reviews.
