Point to Point (1st Class) Train Travel in Italy -- how long have you waited in line at the train station?

We traveled First Class Eurostar all over Italy last May, always bought our tickets the night before we left for a new city. Never had to wait in line more than ten minutes. However, seats were not guarenteed for first class when bought through the automated ticket machines. Seat assignments were only available through a human ticket agent.
