pocket sized dictionary
what is the best, small, english/italian/english dictionary that also includes a good amount of menu items?
thanks~ |
I have the Charles Berlitz "Passport to Italian" which measures 4" by 7" and has 225 pages of text. Its selling point was the top line of the cover: "Speak Italian in Minutes!" Who could resist? (That and the fact my friend lent me her copy...)

For a regular Italian/English dictionary, the Collins Gem mini gets good feedback. For travelers' phrasebooks, the Rick Steves series have pretty good "menu translators" and are organized into useful sections such as transporation, sleeping, etc. You can also go to slowtrav.com and check out their menu translation guide. The Marling Menu Master is a very thin, easy to pocket book that is specific to food. |
I don't know if it's the best or if it has menu items, but maybe take a look at Collins Gem Italian. It measures in inches 1.31 x 4.60 x 3.19, so it will be really small.
Good luck! |
Ooops Lesli and I were typing at the same time.

I live with the Berlitz books...they are so phonetically correct, that the Italians kept answering me in Italian and I had no idea what they were talking about.....
They kept saying "ITALIANO" and I kept saying " Americano"- and they kept saying "NO!!"...I was cracking up... SO , YES to Berlitz-small,compact, menu and TOILET phrases..all the important itmes in phrases! LOL |
A good phrase book for travelers is Barron's "Italian At A Glance". It covers 1500 expressions and phrases needed by travelers, as well as a bilingual dictionary of approximately 2000 words. great little book includes maps also. They have a whole at a Blance French, Spanish ect.Barron's

Hi
I don't know if its the best, but I just received a menu guide for Italy from www.travelersmenureader.com that folds up to about CC card size and has a little plastic holder. It has a reasonably comprehensive list arranged under various headings in alphabetical order. I now know that mirtello are cranberries and mirtilli are blueberries. Price: $4.00. |
