Fiji - agree - not stable
Bali - have no personal experience
Tahiti - was bored out of my mind after 5 days. absolutely zero nightlife. even on your honeymoon, some entertainment is usually welcome.

I vote for Amalfi. Stay at La Siranuse in Positano or on Capri or spend a few nights at each. Wander the quaint hillside streets, rent a boat and cruise the shoreline, stop and swim at your own private beaches, take a day trip to Pompeii, and enjoy the most amazing seafood. If you have more than a week, consider the 3 hour train ride to Rome. Of course, if you just want to lay on the beach all day every day, you can do that at just about all the destinations on your list. If you want to do some sightseeing, there's nothing like Italy!

Amalfi Coast - That's amore!

When Robin Leach of "Lives of the Rich and Famous" fame was asked to name his own number one travel destination, he promptly said, "The Amalfi Coast." It left an impression on me, but I have yet to get there.

Gerry K

If you are planning for a honeymoon of at least 10 days, I would say Bali. (Assuming that August is not the rainy season.) I would not be overly concerned about the political situation as the Balinease are Hindus, not Muslims.

We went to Asia on our honeymoon under the theory that it would be more difficult to get to Asia, once we had a family, than it would be to get to Europe. Also, as we were both able to get two weeks off in a row, which is a problem for us in a "normal" year, the extra time helped given the travel time.

Given it is your honeymoon, I'd suggest you pick someplace that you are unlikely to visit once a family comes along. For that reason, I'd rule out the Rockies and Maritime provinces.

For voting purposes: Bali.

(Spend the extra money and stay at the Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay.)

I welcome the votes and will continue to monitor for a couple days. At the end I will print out and tally the votes.
I think the Amalfi Coast is in the lead at this point.

For Debby-
It's the Athabasca River, and you were either in Pine Bungalows or Becker's Chalets or Jasper House Bungalows or Tekarra Lodge - they are all situated along the river. It's lovely falling asleep with the sound of the rapids outside, isn't it? My vote is for the Rockies.
ja

I'm weighing in with a vote for Amalfi! Got engaged on Valentine's Day and we have decided to honeymoon in Italy. However, I'm the type to get bored with a solid ten days or whatever sitting on a beach. My usually-guilty personality also loves the idea of going to Italy for three weeks and spending our nights in 4* hotels the likes of which we might not see too much of in the future...
My vote would be for the Canadian Rockies, with some explanations below.

My husband and I are not beach types, and like more active vacations. Our honeymoon was to Austria. One of the reasons I liked that destination was that we were not accompanied by thousands of other honeymooners, and when people learned we were on our honeymoon, they made a big deal about it. If you want a more "private" honeymoon time, you might consider how many other honeymooners will be at your destination.

Santorini - Haven't been there, though it sounds great. Maybe not a lot to do?

Amalfi Coast - I've only been as far south as Sorrento. The area is beautiful, but the poverty that I saw (in amongst the rich/well-off/seemingly rich tourist) made me sad. Also, I much prefer Northern Italian cuisine. (I would choose the Italian Riviera over the Amalfi Coast).

Bali - Haven't been. Are you willing to make that plane flight?

Maui - Beach vacation.

Canadian Rockies - Despite the other visitors, it won't be as touristy as some of your other destinations, and definitely not as many honeymooners. You'll have a variety of activities to choose from, including doing nothing except gazing at the beauty of the mountains and/or of your spouse.

Maritime Provinces - I went there as a kid and had nice memories. Went there as an adult and was surprised at how dull I found the area. Not many good restaurants, either, though of course the lobster dinners are delicious.

Fiji - Haven't been; long plane flight;p beach vacation.

Tahiti - Haven't been; long place flight; beach vacation.

Have a great time deciding!

Bali. I thought they were animists, not hindus? Anyway, it's beautiful, lush, relaxing, friendly people.

BALI

Paula; Actually they are animists and hindus. But the hinduism is a kind of a variation on the theme: mostly the Ramayana.

Anyway, I'd vote for Bali as first choice. It's a long flight. It's very hot there. But, it's so otherworldly romantic. The people are lovely, too.

DO NOT GO TO MAUI--BORING and you can do that any time.

Second choice: Amalfi Coast or somewhere in Italy. It will be very romantic and unforgettable. You will be talking about it forever.......

Pam
Leaving from the east coast.
RJ
Taos is a wonderful area!
Thankgoodness I am ultimately going with the vote count, otherwise I would be more torn after this thread. Great places I know, I just feel more torn between them when I hear all of your fascinating reasons to choose one over the other.
As I said before, we have done much research and know that we cannot go wrong with any destination. Some concerns I have heard from friends have been echoed here.
I have seen pictures of Tahiti (Moorea) and know I will make it there at some point, if not on this trip. The beauty is incredible but I have heard friends warn that it can be ghostly quiet. I do not view that as a negative. I have heard from friends that Hawaii is much better. Regardless, I know I will enjoy any of these destinations. Just a bit suprised to hear the same comments about Tahiti.

I hope I haven't started a rant and rave session now on only Tahiti b/c I enjoy the comments and want to continue the voting for another day or two.

If by "Tahiti" you really mean Bora Bora and Moorea, then that would be my number one choice for a honeymoon. If you really do mean Tahiti then no.

My second choice would be Santorini.

Third would be the Amalfi coast -- been there, gorgeous, great food, nice people, lovely scenery.

My fourth choice would be Maui. Been there, lovely, fun, great beaches, great food, lots to do.

I really enjoyed the Maritime Provinces but they are not "honeymoonish" to me at all.

I loved the Canadian Rockies, but they would not be at the top of my list for a honeymoon. Definitely a "must" for some other trip though!

I personally would not go to Bali right now although it is on the top of my list for "someday." Even though there aren't travel advisories for Bali specifically, there are for Indonesia more generally, and you generally have to fly through Jakarta to get to Bali, so I say no thanks given that you have all these other great choices anyway.

Ditto for Fiji even though it's supposed to be terrific -- it's probably fine, but since you have all these other great choices, I'd wait...
Something to consider - are any of the places you mentioned close enough that you might be able to go back as often as you would like to? My husband and I only had four days for our actual honeymoon so we didn't go overseas and now we're glad that we didn't because we have been back to our honeymoon spot several times for our anniversary. So you win both ways, you can save the overseas destination for another big trip and have a great excuse to make furutre trips back to rekindle romantic honeymoon memories.

My vote would be for the Maritimes - a luxury inn or bed and breakfast (see if there are any Relais & Chateau properties) (no kids!), with an ocean view, walks on the beach, cheap lobster and not so cheap champagne every night!!!

(Even if you are staying somewhere that is relatively expensive with a nice resturant, don't let that stop you from going to the pier/market and having them cook you some lobsters to take back and eat on the beach picnic style!)

Maritimes

Excuse me...I need educated here. When you say Maritime Provinces, what exactly are you referring to? Canada's Bay of Fundy? Nova Scotia?

Ok, from the East Coast I would say Almafi, the others are great but would just be too long flying after the wedding, etc. Tahiti isn't boring to me, and you can always get to the other places closer to the US and I have never been to Bali, so for all around fun and such a short flight, I say......

Positano

with short trips in surrounding area if you have time.

Back again. If you are leaving from the east coast, get on a direct, red eye flight from the U.S. to Naples, and then have a hired car drive you the 45 minutes to your hotel on the Amalfi coast. Simple. One night of travel. Tahiti, on the otherhand, was simply a nightmare. 1 hr to airport, 2 hrs early for flt, 5 & 1/2 hr flt to L.A., 4 hr layover so we could be there 3hrs early for the international leg, 9 & 1/2 hr flt to tahiti, 1 hr layover, 20 min. flt to Morea. Almost 24 hours of travel just to lay on a quiet beach. Absolutely not worth it. That is why the east coasters have the Carribean!Italy has much more to offer.

Amalfi - (but you already counted my vote already)

We had no problems with getting to Tahiti. (French Polynisia, Tahiti is just one of her islands) We spent the night in LA, left early in the morning, and 8hrs later we were in Tahiti, or Bora Bora, or Moorea........
