Please suggest a destination in Europe for Thanksgiving week
My children always have the entire week of US Thanksgiving off from school (for those of you outside the US, typically the last week of November). We've never traveled during that time, but I'm considering it. Can anyone suggest a destination to visit that time of year? It could be an intersting city (with good public transportation) or a scenic destination.
Please don't lecture me for not providing more info on our likes and dislikes...just think, if YOU were choosing a destination for late November, where would YOU go? |
Dublin, London, Edinburgh, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Rome, Florence, Venice, Dubrovnik, Athens, Berlin, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Warsaw, Alexandria, Cairo, Jerusalem, Tunis, Casablanca, Timbuktu

We spent Thanksgiving week in England one year, basically on a whim (it was cheaper to fly to London than to visit some family members in Las Vegas).
We loved it. Crowds were almost non-existent and the weather was fine (cool, but nice). We drove up to the Lake District for a couple of days, then spent the second half of the trip in London itself. Easy traveling (London Underground is superb!), good hotel rates, the same sites you'd see any other time of the year. Gayle |
Paris seems to be getting more popular that time of year. The weather can be dicey, with a good chance of cooler, wet weather, but it is still Paris.

Sicily. Barbados. New Zealand. Lisbon and other parts of Portugal.
Best wishes, Rex |
You might enjoy your week visiting Germany's Christmas markets. We spent Thanksgiving 2003 seeing the Rheinland markets in Mainz, Rudesheim, and Trier. The 2004 markets open that week (Cologne 11/22 Mainz 11/25, others around the same time.)

Eastern France - Lyon to Strasbourg. |
I went to Paris last November that week. I had 1 rainy day...which is not bad for ANY time of the year. And 3 of the days that week was even a wee bit too warm to wear my heavy coat.
If I can't swing September this year, I liked that week in November...it made my "holidays" incredible! |
Having done a London/Amsterdam trip one Thanksgiving week a few years back, I'd probably look for somewhere further south. While it was unseasonably cold, we also had to contend with very short days (gets dark around 4 PM) and when the sun is out, it's so low in the sky that it always seems to be in your eyes. That may sound like a small point, but it's really tough to sightsee or just read street signs so you can navigate with that sun so low.
More recently, we had a great trip with great weather in mid-November in Southern Spain. |
With a week plus the weekends to play with, you really have worldwide reach. We've done Paris at that time of year and enjoyed it, but there have been some real steals to Bangkok and we've done that twice. It's very economical, interesting and friendly. Public transportation isn't stellar, but there are a lot of reasonably priced tour and taxis cost dirt.

We just returned from Paris, so that needs to come off the list. I'm not brave enough to do Bangkock with 3 children.
The issue of the very short days is also bothersome to me. |
