I spent 2 nights in Chinon a couple of years ago. It was one of my stops on a 10 day driving trip of the Loire Valley, and one of my favorite towns, along with Amboise. I stayed at the Hotel Diderot, which was fine. Not luxurious, but clean and comfortable, and well-located to walk around the town. I loved the town itself, and the chateau is wonderful, as is the walk up to it. I had a guide for the Chateau, (which you don't have to do, but the guide was quite interesting). I enjoy the medieval castles like Chinon (mostly in ruins) more than the beautiful Renaissance ones.

I had a delicious dinner at a cute little traditional French restaurant, La Bonne France, which was recommended by my hotel. I ate the second night at Le Creperie, where I had the best crepes I have ever eaten. I also stayed in Saumur at a beautiful hotel, the Anne d'Anjou - but I much preferred the town of Chinon.

While touring the Loire and the nearby chateaus and basing in Amboise I made a day trip to Chinon. Chinon makes a nice day trip but I can't imagine staying there more than a day considering all the other nearby places to see and things to do.
