Please review my 2-week Northern Italy itinerary! + Questions about Trento
Let me start by saying that this forum has been extremely helpful in planning our vacation. Thanks to everyone!
My husband wanted to ski and I wanted to go to Italy. Compromise: 5 days of skiing and 8 days of touring Northern Italy.
here's our itinerary so far. We will be going in March:
1) Venice (3 nights)
2) Ferrara (2 nights - with day trip to Ravenna)
3) Trento or Bolzano (1 night - we're leaning towards Trento)
4) Castelrotto (5 nights - for skiing and visiting the Dolomites)
5) Verona (2 nights with day trip to Mantua)
We have some additional questions:
1) Is it worth to stop in Bologna for 1 morning (3-5 hours) on our way from Ferrara to Trento?
2) Is Trento a better place to spend the night than Bolzano?
3) Any recommendations for inexpensive, but charming places to stay in Trento? Do we need advance reservations for it for a Saturday night in March?
4) Any recommendations for inexpensive, but charming places to stay in Verona?
Thanks!

Dear Mariarosa,
As to your question of spending the night in Bolzano or Trento --I'd vote for Trento.(We've overnighted in both.)
In late November, we stayed at the Villa Madruzzo in the hilltop village of Cognola. (Cognola is on the mountainside northeast of Trento and looks down over the town.) Very easy to find and only 10 minutes down the hill to the center of town.
The villa is lovely, and the grounds and gardens are very complimentary of this 15th century residence.
We paid the equivalent of $80.00US for a triple (with expansive breakfast buffet and service that was amazing!)
Reservations are absolutely necessary. Very popular spot, not only for lodging, but diners as well.
The web site is http://www.villamadruzzo.it
Trento is very cosmopolitan with great shopping and a wonderful castle to explore.
E-mail for any other details.
P.S. Bologna is worth a stop--just to have lunch!!

Hello Mariarosa,
As Georgine says, the castle in Trento is wonderful, and Trento would be a good choice for an overnight stop.
However, Bolzano is a lovely city too, and well worth a visit. The contrast between the two cities is interesting - Bolzano city centre is decidedly Austrian in character (as is Castelrotto), - as this whole area was formerly Austrian territory. Bolzano is also home to the 'Ice-Man', - the 5,000 year old skeleton they discovered in the mountains in 1991.
Have a great holiday! The Dolomites are wonderful (- one of my favourite parts of Italy!)

Thanks Georgine and Steve for the great advice...we will see the sights in both Trento and Bolzano, but we'll try to sleep in Trento. Villa Madruzzo sounds great.
Does anyone else out there have a recommendation for accomodations in the town of Trento?

WE SPENT 18 GLORIOUS DAYS TOURING NORTHERN ITALY IN 1999. DO TRY TO SEE THE OPERA IN VERONA BUT DO NOT BOOK ANY INEXPENSIVE HOTELS OUTSIDE OF THE MAIN SHOPPING AREA AS THERE ARE LADIES OF THE NIGHT ON EVERY STREET CORNER. VERY SCARY IF YOU ARE WALKING AT NIGHT. TRY TO SEE FLORENCE AND VENICE IS FABULOUS! WISH WE WERE GOING BACK SOON! THE DOLOMITES ARE UNBELIVABLE! WE WERE IN CORTINA IN THE SPRING AS WE DO NOT SKI. I CAN'T IMAGINE NEGOTIATING THE ROADS IN WINTER BUT I GUESS THEY MUST KEEP THEM CLEARED. HAVE A GREAT TIME.
