Please...recommendations for stopovers driving between berlin and copenhagen
 

can anyone recommend a quaint town or two to make the 5 hour drive more constructive/interesting?

I would appreciate it.
(Travelling with two kids under 10.)

Not sure what exactly you're looking for when stating you want something quaint. I will try to throw in a few suggestions, though:

Rostock is the port from where the ferries to Gedser leave. It is a medium sized German city and has reasonably nice center of town.
Warnemuende is anearby seaside resort that is pretty vibrant.

More quiet would be a small detour to the peninsula of Darss/ Fischland. Wustrow is an option being located pretty close to the mainland. Barth is located on the "Bodden", a secluded stretch of water separating the peninsula from the mainland. It's very quiet and I have heard good reviews of the restored warehouse hotel called "Speicher".

On the Danish side, Marielyst is a popular, yet idyllic seaside resort.

Just noticed that you are travelling with two kids. The aforementioned suggestions of beach resorts would provide them with beaches that they could play on and take a dip - without you having to worry too much as the Baltic Sea is very calm and friendly.

If you don't mind taking a detour and your kids are thrilled by amusement parks you could make a stop in Luebeck (fascinating medieval Old Town) and make an excursion to "HansaPark", usually a fun destination for kids (I loved going there when I was that age). It is located in Sierksdorf, about 30 km North of Luebeck - and it would be on the way to Puttgarden, the other German port with ferries leaving for Denmark. The ferry crossing to Rödby there would take only 45 min. (as compared to 1 h 45 min. from Rostock to Gedser) and ferries sail 24 hours a day, every half hour.
