Please recommend day trips from Aviano
We'd like to use Aviano as a base while staying with a friend. I know Aviano isn't far from Venice. What other places would make good day trips without a car? We will be there late Sept-early Oct.
Also - should we spend at least one night in Venice just for the experience of staying in Venice? |
I have based out of Aviano a few times and would recommend at least an overnight in Venice. Without a car you would take a bus to Pordenone and from there it is a short train ride to Venice.
Is there any way at all that you could get hold of a car for a day or two? Aviano is right at the base of the Dolomite Alps and some of the most magnificent scenery is just up the mountain and down the road - a ride as far as Cortina and back is doable in a day and well worth it. It would be a shame to be so close and not go through the mountains. Aviano is a nice little town with good restaurants and an excellent Gelato stand near the church square. Many people there speak English because of the US air base. The actual airfield is a few kilometers away but the base itself is right in town. |
I should have mentioned that there is a train station in Aviano too, but the schedule is very limited.

Close enough and very cute the small town named BARCIS; the, as you're there have your dinner (or lunh) at AQUILA NERA.
Have a lovely trip. Ciao. Vincenzo |
You can do the big touristy cities - or try the true real Italy. Or maybe both.
Pordenone would be an example of the the true Italy. I lived in Pordenone for 6 months. What I loved was on Sat. evening 4-8 pm, walking the old part of town, ducking in and out of stores, having a drink and then later dinner. A beautiful authentic time. Tuscanson |
