I stayed at Hotel Residence, about a block from Place Bellecor and just a few blocks from Vieux Lyon. It was modest but comfortable and was easy access to everything. It's just up the pedestrian street from Perrache.

I can vouch for the Hotel La Residence - it's well located on a pedestrian street 5 minutes south of place Bellecour, and is well-run and pleasant, although some of the rooms feel a tad old-fashioned.
Incidentally, family members of mine have just booked a week in a 2 room apartment (with bedroom, kitchenette and living-room) at the Citadines hotel-residence for 120 euros per night. The place also has studios for around 90 euros per night. It's a fully serviced hotel-residence (breakfast, laundry, etc.) located right near the rue Mercière and place des Jacobins, about 5 minutes walk from Bellecour, and around 5-10 minutes across the river from the Old Town.
There's plenty of shopping around the Bellecour area: the main shopping streets are the pedestrianised Rue de la République running north of Bellecour and rue Victor Hugo running south to Perrache. More upmarket stores are to be found on rue Edouard Herriot, parallel to the rue de la République. There is also a large shopping mall at La Part Dieu (on the east bank of the Rhône).
For historical sights, there's the Old Town and its traboules ("secret" passageways linking up buildings and streets), the Roman amphitheatres near Fourvière (and the lesser known one on the slopes of la Croix Rousse) and the museum of Gallo-Roman history.
Atop the Croix Rousse hill there's an excellent market (every day except Monday), and you can also find markets on the Sâone quayside and on place Carnot. There's also a craft market on Sunday mornings on the Saône quayside by the old town.
By the way, I think Grandmere has confused the Opera House with the Theatre des Celestins, which is actually opposite the Hotel des Artistes (also an excellent location, by the way). The Opera house is up at the other end of the rue de la République, further away from Place Bellecour.
