please help student studying in Paris/8th arr. reasonable cafes
 

Hello fellow travelers-
My daughter is staying on Rue du Bassano in a beautiful home in Paris for the semester. She is having a hard time finding any inexpensive cafes to sit and work, which is understandable considering where she is living. I thought maybe someone out there might know of a hidden gem?

shows cafes in 8th with free wifi - and also McDonalds and Starbucks in the area - those two are different from regular cafes in that you need not even buy anything to sit and use the wifi and work, etc. You can in a formal cafe but will pay $4 or so for a drink.

Your daughter can explore Paris and find a less expensive area to sit in cafes. She only needs to buy a small coffee to sit for hours. Anything in the area will be just about the same price.

There are wifi hotspots all over Paris. She can sit in a park with her own bottle of water - free! Tell her to google Paris wifi for Paris hot spots. I'm sure she already knows how to do this. Here's a site to get you started.

I did not do a good job explaining myself. Sorry. She is looking for inexpensive cafes to eat and work while there. Normally she is with fellow students but some nights she comes back and eats alone. She was hoping to find some local reasonable places near the home she is staying at, since she is going to school in the 6th.

She has no kitchen facilities and has to eat every meal out?

The best bet is for her to walk around and look at the posted menus. The farther away from the Champs Elysees the better.

Doesn't she have a metro pass? Can't she go to some other areas that may be cheaper, i.e., Marais, northern end of the 18th? She should look for some Asian or North African restaurants which will be cheaper.

Isn't there anyone where she lives to advise her?

Most of the people posting here are tourists although there are a few people who live in Paris who frequent this board. Generally tourists aren't looking for the cheapest places but for something in their area (budget or not) or something special.

Sorry, I can't really help beyond the above advice since I never eat in the 8th.

Who is she going to school with? Who is her home host--can they help?
She will "learn the ropes" I am sure. She can buy stuff at the market and make a sandwich.

Under what auspices is she staying at this wonderful house? Was it "cheaper"? I'm not getting the picture, but I AM interested.

Well, of course, she should have a bite in the 6th before she returns home to the 8th !!

Thank you..no she has breakfast served everyday and has dinner with her host family two nights a week. I am going to suggest that when she is not eating with friends, then to eat in the sixth before she heads back up to the eighth.
