Please help: munich u-bahn
 

I'm mortified to have to ask this, having lived for years in NYC and a public transportion "pro".

But - I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get from the Munich airport to the Munich Marriott: http://tinyurl.com/2uy9bn

I can't find a u-bahn map that overlays with street names, but I'm sure I'm just not looking in the right place.

I wish they had hopstop.com in Germany!!

can anyone help?? Which u-bahn station is closest to the Marriott? Thanks SO much! We leave in a week and I'm starting to panic over this stuff. :)

The Nordfriedhof stop is right around the corner from your hotel.

Ride the S8 to Marienplatz, then the U6 to your station.

I used Google maps to determine the stop by entering <b>marriott munich</b>, then nanika.net/metro to compute the route. If you have a PDA, it's well worth downloading - indispensible for day-to-day pathfinding.

I have a map of Munich that I bought at Barnes and Noble - don't remember the map series name, but they are the ones that are laminated (so they don't get ruined when you spill beer on them) and have a lot of sights and hotels marked on them. The Munich map also has U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines. Very convinient.

Barnes and Noble carries them for a lot of different cities, and I always try to pick up this type when I go someplace.

Try Berliner Strasse 93 at www.stadtplandienst.de. You'll have a beautiful view of the Autobahn. (Don't worry) ;-). Maps of Munich underground can be found at www.mvv-muenchen.de. You have several alternatives of getting there, depending on the amount of your luggage, the U6 from the Marienplatz is a good choice. S1 to Feldmoching then the U-Bahn to M&uuml;nchner Freiheit (change at Scheidplatz) the other train is waiting for your arrival), is another. And then there's still Bus #50.

By the way, the Single or Partner Day ticket will get you from the airport to town and all around.

Bus #50 connects S1 to S8 on the Mittlerer Ring from Moosach to north of Schwabing.

By the way, :-) my favourite small Beergarden is just a few 100 meters from there. 2.10&euro; for a Wei&szlig;bier, 7.00&euro; for a (yummmy) Schnitzel with Salad and fries. No, I'm not willing to share the location :D :D

That's quite easy. You either look at the airport's website and click on the train symbol and than click to the mvv iteneray planner:

Or you go to the site of the mvv (munich traffic association) directly:

In the query can enter the street adress (Berliner Stra&szlig;e 95), you don't need to know the name of the U-Bahn station (Nordfriedhof). But it is a shame that the Marriott hides this important information! (BTW, I have stayed at the Marriott already; it is a quite nice hotel, although you have to take the U-Bahn to reach the city center).

A convenient connection would be:

Departure Flughafen at 10:02 S8 direction Buchenau
arrival Marienplatz at 10:40

departure Marienplatz at 10:48 S6 direction Fr&ouml;ttmaning

arrival Nordfriedhof 10:56

about 0,4km / 7min walking

Unless you are really keen to reach the Marriott by train, I would strongly recommend to use the Lufthansa Airport Shuttle Bus.

It has departures on a very regular basis and stops at Nordfriedhof, from where it's just a few steps (approx. 300 yards) to the hotel.

By using the bus you could avoid all the hassle of having to change trains repeatedly. Timewise it should be as economical (unless there is a traffic jam). And the cost is roughly the same (and would even be cheaper if you buy a round-trip ticket). The bus is not limited to Lufthansa passengers, BTW.

Except that: the train only requires one change, the -bahn ride is virtually &quot;free&quot; if one acquires a day pass, and traffic jams are not a consideration.

But the convenience of the bus might outweigh these considerations for some.

Agreed 100%, the Airport Bus would be the best choice!

Forgot to add:

Bus departures from the Airport every 20 minutes from 6.20 h a.m. through 9.40 h p.m. and travel time should in fact be rather around 30 min. to Schwabing, so it would actually be considerably quicker than the trains.

wow! ok - we'd considered the bus but even 300 yards lugging our suitcases didn't sound very appealing to us.

I'm going to have to reassess my googling skills because I didn't find ANY of these websites earlier! lol!

The U-Bahn station is about the same distance from the hotel as the bus stop. And you'd have to schlepp your luggage twice on the trains as you will have to change trains, whereas the bus is nonstop.

BTW you can also tell the bus driver to order a Taxi for you which will pick you up at the Nordfriedhof stop. The driver would hate you for making him drive for only 300 yards, but would still be required to take you. I do not think this is necessary, though.

We used the bus to get to the Marriott and the bus driver asked us where we were headed and stopped (illegally I suppose) at a corner near to the hotel so it was a easy walk. Once in the hotel it is a short walk to the U-Bahn station as well. By the way, the Munich Marriott is quite nice if a bit off the beaten path in a nice quiet mainly residential area
