Please help
 

My husband and I have 1 week in Italy and are planning to do 3 days in Venice and 4 days in Rome. What is there to do in Venice and Rome. What would you suggest? Any idea on a reasonable price hotel less than 200 Euro per night. Any information would be appreciated. We are taking the train so we do not have a vehicle. When looking at the map of Venice, how far is it from the train station to centre town with St. Petes Square and Rialto bridge. Thanks

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that this isn't a troll posting.

First of all, the Piazza in Venice is St Mark's/San Marco. Pete had nothing to do with it.
How far from the train station? In minutes or miles? Depending on walking speed, and if you are with or without luggage, the walk from the train station to Rialto, say 25-30 minutes, another 10 -15 minutes to the Piazza. These are purely ranges.

What is there to do???? What makes you want to go there in the first place???
If you click on the top of this screen on Destinations you will find lots of basic sightseeing and other info on these cities, also transportation.
Let me suggest that if you arrive in the Venice train station with luggage that you take the vaporetto (water bus) to the stop nearest to your hotel. Your hotel can advise you how to reach them from the vaporetto stop.

OK, I'm going to take a stab at this because this is a brand new poster and my number one pet peeve with these boards is our "experts" who have to behave obnoxiously to brand new posters; not a suggestion as to how to post better, just slamming them.

Vandlquinn, I highly recommend you check out the Eyewitness books for Venice and Rome. You can often get them at Costco cheaply or check your library; they might have them as well. I think the Rome Eyewitness is worth it's weight in gold. They will give you SO much information, neighborhood by neighborhood, art piece by art piece, guilded historic building by building. There is so much for you to enjoy.

If you do a search here on Rome hotels and Venice hotels, you'll find loads of recommendations. After you've narrowed it down to one or two, come back and post (with the hotel name and city in the title) and see if anyone can give you recent, updated advice.

And welcome to Fodors travel talk! Your prize trip sounds like fun. I did the Rhine cruise and enjoyed it alot. Basel is a pretty fun place to explore.

My favorite hotel in Venice is Pensione La Calcina. www.lacalcina.com but reserve early as it is very popular (with good reason) and in your budget, with a nice breakfast included. From the S.Lucia train station you can take a public vaporetto (boat bus) which is not expensive and drops you within a few blocks of the hotel (the hotel will give you exact directions if you ask).

For Venice simply get a guidebook plus map and wander around. There's plenty to see and do without even planning. I don't know exactly how far (from your original question) but Venice is fairly compact, and easy to get around primarily on foot.

I have not been to Rome but because it is a bigger and more hectic city, I think a little more planning is probably needed. You might look into a 1/2 or full day city tour on your first day to give you an overview of the major sites.

I'll throw in one last travel tip that will make life easier. Since you will be going by air, train, plus most likely on foot and by taxi at some point... pack light! For a one week trip I suggest only (1) 22" rolling suitcase each person, plus a small tote or carry-on/day-bag.

Suze's advice about packing light is great! I thought of another thing for Rome. It's a walkable city, but you'll walk a ton. When your feet can't take anymore, hop on a bus and ride it end to end. You'll see parts of Rome (and Romans) that you'd never see staying in the historic center. You can buy your tickets in a "bar" or "tabacchi". A "bar" should not be mistaken for place where just buy cocktails. You buy a huge assortment of things there; including stand up espresso, ice cream, soda, water, bus tickets, lotto tickets....
