You might also have a look at The A-Z of French food, published by Scribo. Slim, easy to carry book, that we use even after 12 years in France - you never know when they're going to slip some new term or regional variation onto a menu. Avaiable from Amazon in the UK and in France, but perhaps not in NOrth America. If all else fails, be adventurous for ONCE in your life when ordering. The only rule: if you look down and it is still moving, send it back.

Unless of course they're oysters, and you want them to be still moving! I have friends who tap the shell to make sure they move.
