Thank you, dreamon. I will review the Krka website again. I think we would enjoy a boat ride, as well as some walking. There are various boat rides--I don't suppose you remember which one you did? The monastery boat trip looks interesting.

I will note about your suggested route in the Istrian penninsula.

Sibenik does sound nice, but as I said, it's all about making personal choices. I think I have gotten pretty good at sniffing about the best itinerary for us, even it if means leaving some sites behind.

Thanks again.

Direct ferry connections between Dubrovnik and Trogir are limited. You might need to travel via Split and then take a local bus or taxi to Trogir. Alternatively, consider renting a car for this segment to explore the scenic coastal route at your own pace.
Well, at least it needs to be double checked.
Also, consider a visit to the Lake Bled.
But overall, great planning!

All Dubrovnik - MIddle Dalmatia catamaran lines end at Split. Trogir has to be reached by bus or taxi.

There is a local catamaran that operates in season (generally June through September) from Split to Trogir: https://www.buraline.com/

It takes an hour, whereas bus or taxi would be quicker.

I personally found this option to be enjoyable if one really wants to travel by boat.

Thanks. Would be a good idea, if the timetables of the 3 companies would match.
That doesn't seem to be the case.
Arrival of Jadrolinija catamaran: 13.05
arrival of Krilo catamaran: 19.45

Youlittle - Yes, thank you. A car from Caftat to Trogir would be better, indeed. However, I decided I don't want to be stuck with it in Trogir, so the lesser of two evils is taking a bus or ferry. Good idea about visiting Lake Bled. There is quite a bit to see there, but I think it would be more peaceful to stay in Bohinj.

neckervd and Travel_Nerd - Thank you for your information about Dubrovnik to Trogir logistics. I just did a tiny bit of research when laying out the itinerary, and I figured that it would be feasible to make the trip in a few hours, one way or the other. That is how I plan, then I go back as I get closer, and work out the details. I believe kja took a bus, stating that she enjoyed the views, so that would be fine. I am wondering if Uber operates around Split, in order to get us to Trogir. And I did indeed think that the boat would be nice from Trogit to Split on the day we go into Split to sightsee, at least one way.

Should be!

Yes, as I said above, I preferred the views from the bus to the views from the ferries. I should, perhaps, add that the views from the bus from south of Split to Dubrovnik are among the most beautiful views I have ever been fortunate enough to see. Up there with travel in Switzerland or through the Scottish highlands. In contrast, the views from the ferries were a bit of been-here-done-that for me. JMO.

Thank you, kja. Yes, I have read in more than one thread that you enjoyed the view from the bus. There is a bus that leaves from Dubrovnik and makes two stops before getting to Split. Alternatively, there is a bus that leaves from Dubrovnik and makes 28 stops (yikes) before arriving in Trogir. I think the first alternative is better. Maybe Uber or taxi from Split to Trogir? Let's hope the restrooms on the bus aren't too disgusting.

Coincidentally, American Airlines just contacted us today. Our return BA return flight from Zagreb to Heathrow is cancelled on September 12, so the supervisor offered to put us on a flight on September 13, and I grabbed it. It leaves a bit later than originally scheduled, so now we have to stay in London overnight. We have to purchase those transit Visas, which is essentially a tax in disguise. Anyway, I was thinking of putting the extra night in Plitvice, so we don't have to rush out of there after visiting the park. We can have a leisurely morning, see the park, and leave the next day for Rovinj, making some stops along the way in our rental. What do you think?

kja Dec 18th, 2024 05:47 PM

I can see the argument against the 28-stop bus! Ouch! I suspect you can get from Split to Trogir by uber or taxi ... or frequent bus. Whatever works for you.

Two nights in Plitvice gives you some flexibility for one of Croatia's greatest gems. I'm getting the impression that you want time at Krka; if you really want to see the lakes there (not just the falls -- i.e., if you want to take a boat ride through the lakes), your aren't giving yourselves much latitude for seeing even part of the Plitvice Lakes park that day ... and if the weather doesn't cooperate, that could create problems. With a second night, you can adjust the time you leave for Istria as necessary. And FWIW, I personally would shortchange Istria rather than the travertine falls of either Krka or Plitvice ... but that's me, a sucker for beautiful waterfalls.

I assume you have to spend a night in London? You can't add it to Zagreb?

Travel_Nerd Dec 18th, 2024 06:04 PM

The EU is also working on implementing one of those, ahem, "tax in disguise" as you put it. And *might* even be implemented when you travel. Croatia and Slovenia are EU countries.

CaliforniaLady Dec 19th, 2024 05:25 PM

Travel_Nerd - Thank you for the, shall I say, warning about those annoying visas. I will have to check on the Balkan countries before we leave.

kja - Thank you, yes the new itinerary for that portion of the trip would be amended as follows:

Tuesday, September 2 - Leave Trogir early in the morning, rent a car, and head to Krka. Spend as much time there as possible, and then spend the night at Plitvice, arriving before dark.

Wednesday, September 3 - Get up whenever, and see as much of Plitvice as possible. Sleep in Plitvice.

Thursday, September 4 - If it rains the day prior, see Plitvice in the morning. If not, head out leisurely for Rovinj, with interesting stops along the way.

The rest of the trip gets moved forward one day.

I called AA again, and I think I have a better return. So what happened was that BA cancelled the Zagreb to Heathrow flight on September 11, so they booked us on September 12. Further, the flight now leaves later, so getting back to the US that night will be difficult. However, they changed us to a flight from Heathrow to Dallas, with an overnight in Dallas before heading home. If you don't leave the airport and go through customs, this type of UK Visa, which is called "A Direct Airside Transfer Visa" is offered at the bargain price of 35 pounds sterling.

So I think we're set. Now I need to book hotels and get down to a detailed itinerary.

kja Dec 19th, 2024 05:33 PM

I think you'll have a wonderful trip!

CaliforniaLady Dec 19th, 2024 05:36 PM

Thank you, kja, for all your wonderful help!

kja Dec 19th, 2024 05:48 PM

I'm glad if I was of help, CaliforniaLady, but honestly, you started with a great plan. I, and others, have just helped you tweak it. What we're here for! :)
