Please comment on my whirlwind itinerary through Bavaria

I am planning our Germany trip in stages and have made it to Bavaria. I'll briefly spell it out and ask for comments or suggestions please.

Train from Nurnberg to Fussen in mid-afternoon. Alstadthotel zum Hechten. Pick up pre-reserved rental car. Wander around Fussen for the evening.

Next day, drive to Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in morning, we will have reservations. Drive to Tegelberg and enjoy the gondola and luge rides. Visit Wies Church. Drive to Oberammergau. Wander around town and visit woodcarvers if not to late. Stay at Alte Post.

Next day, finish up our visit to Oberammergau and drive to Kloster Ettal then to Linderhof. In afternoon go to top of Zugspitze (and pray the weather is clear). Stay in G-P at Gasthof Fraundorfer.

I first thought we would stay in Fussen for three nights but decided we could throw our luggage in the trunk of the rental car and not have to spend time backtracking each evening.

Is this too much for the time available? I already dropped Ehrenberg because I didn't see how it would fit in without rushing too much.

Anything else we should see?

Thanks so much! Barb

It will be late afternoon or early evening before you get to Oberammergau, so I don't know how much you'll see that day. The Zugspitze has always been clearer in the morning in my experiences, but that's always a chance you take. Your morning of Oberammergau, Kloster Ettal, and Linderhof is packed full and will run into the afternoon. Maybe you could try the Zugspitze the morning after your stay in G-P? G-P is a wonderful area to stroll and shop but I don't see that you'll have any time for that unless you put off the Zugspitze till thmorning.

Please don't leave out Linderhof palace! It's the most personal, I think, of Ludwig's "castles."

Postal, I think we will go to the Zugspitze in the morning, thanks for the excellent suggestion. Linderhof is high on my list of things to see so we won't skip it. Thanks for the confirmation Underhill.

One possibility: See the Wieskirche the afternoon you arrive in Fuessen. It doesn't take that long to see and you might get there after the tour buses leave.

I was going to suggest driving to Oberammergau via the scenic route thru Reutte and northern Austria along the Plansee, stopping at Linderhof along the way to Oberammergau. But if you want to do the gondola and luge, then you might be short on time.

RufusTFirefly, ViaMichelin says that Wieskirche is only 26 minutes from Fussen. This is quite doable as I understand that it does not take a lot of time for the visit. Yes, we are quite interested in the luge. I'm a bit of a middle aged thrill seeker and just have to try it so when I tell people I have zip lined in Costa Rica, scuba dived with Carribean Reef Sharks in the Bahamas, climbed the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and parasailed in Belize, I can add luging in Bavaria! If you liked parasailing, we saw lots of people hang gliding when we were in the Schwangau area.

Ziplining in Costa Rica is something I'll never forget--what fun. And I'm not normally a thrill seeker (instead of the big roller coasters at an amusement park, I'll ride the Scooby Doo with the kiddies).
