please advise us on our athens and cyclades trip!

hi-
my husband and two friends are planning a two week vacation to greece at the end of august. we plan to stay in athens for a few days then head to the islands. we are interested in places "off the beaten path", yet beautiful.(i'm an artist and plan to bring my easel). so far, we've been thinking of siros and another island to stay, then maybe do some day-trips. any advice will be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

One or two days are enough in Athens, especially in August. Athens has two sights and a million cars and very ugly buildings. It may be the cradle of the West, but it stands with at least one foot in the Middle East. The street-life is interesting.

If you have two weeks you have enough time to take a trip out of Athens to Meteora and Delphi. Both are incredible and worth the time. There are two night tours you can take that are very affordable. Don't miss the experience.

In Athens, take the Funicular up "L" Hill (I have forgotten the complicated name but you'll see it, it's the highest point in Athens) The view is spectacular and gives you a great look at how amazingly huge Athens is. Spend an evening in the Plaka and find a restaurant with dancing and typical Greek entertainment.

For good island info check Matt Barrett's website www.greecetravel.com

My husband and I are heading back to Greece the end of August And we to are planning to go to Syros it will be our first trip to the island so I can't offer any advice but we chose it because it wasn't as touristy. You may want to have a look at the island of Foleandros people often compare it to Santorini but it is much less touristy, but has the dramatic cliffs and a pretty main town. I would also suggest visitng Meteroa if you do some travelling on the mainland.
