A little rushed, especially with a 6 year old. I would forget Paris and Lucerne and add day to Munich. Are you going to go by car or train?

Yours is not an itinerary I would undertake with a 6 year-old, and especially in August. I would drop Switzerland altogether (and probably the Black Forest, as well); you'll save on travel time that could be better spent sightseeing. Bavaria and neighboring Salzburg and the Salzkammergut have so much to offer summer visitors without running here, there, and everywhere. Just my €0,02.

Garmisch as your base for several days. Tons to do and see there for a 6 year old and adults. Skip Paris and Lucerne this trip.

Take the BMW tour in Munich. He will love seeing the robots at work.

Trains are great for all those places - even Black Forest though a car there would be nice but not needed for a day's foray into the hills. For lots on trains check www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.seat61.com. Schedules- www.bahn.de/en.

If you drive a German rental car on major Austrian motorways, ensure that you have an Austrian motorways vignette. Especially if you fly into Munich, pick up a rental car and base yourself in Garmisch (highly recommended.) This can be purchased on major motorways prior to entering Austria for less than 10 Euro.

I'd suggest skipping the Black Forest - a long drive or train ride from Munich area and instead head to Lucerne or take train to Paris - whatever you see in Black Forest will be no finer than in Bavaria.

One time we did an MWR tour from base and hit five countries in one day. Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. rome2rio is great for figuring out the route. We had fun and it was entertaining but their tours always were. I would never do it on my own. I hate telling people they can't do it all. Your trip and you know your son. Love train travel there as Pl suggest.

Again I took trains from Freiburg for a day in Black Forest - rather than driving on tedious roads take the train to say Titisee and walk around the lake - very popular with Germans or to other towns.
