please advise on itinerary

Hello everyone,Please help.I need advice on our itinerary for our 12 day trip to Switzerland in January. we will fly in and out of Geneva. We have decided after reading a mountain of posts on this forum to travel by train, mainly due to the time of the year. a good way to see the countryside in comfort. Is our itinerary doable???
Day 1...Geneva to Montreux
Day 2...Montreux ??Chocolate train trip
Day 3...Montreux to either Wengen
or Lauterbrunnen
Day 4...Trip to Junfraujoch or Schilthorn
Day 5...Lauterbrunnen to Luzern
Day 6...Luzern
Day 7...Luzern
Day 8...Luzern to Pontresina
Day 9...Day trip to Torino on Bernina
Express
Day 10..Pontresina
Day 11..Glacier Express to Brig then onto
Lausanne
Day 12..Lausanne
Day 13..Depart Geneva

I have allowed 3 days in Luzern and Pontresina, but am thinking maybe spend 3 days in Lauterbrunnen or Wengen instead of Pontresina.
also is a Swiss Flexisaver pass for 8 days the best one to get???
thank you for any advice. I have read soooo many posts on this site I am drowning in all the info.

Hi tpgtraveller,

This is a good itinerary to see some of the best of Switzerland -- and congratulations for going a bit off the beaten path to Pontresina!

I have one suggestion. To minimize the moves and the number of times you change hotels, can you get immediately to the Jungfrau area when you land in Geneva? If you do that, and tack those two overnights onto the end of your stay in Montreux, you'll save yourself one move.

You can easily stay in Montreux the night before you depart from Geneva. The train goes right to the airport in 1h14 or 1h20 with no changes.

Good luck!

good idea above ;-)

I'd just stay in Montreux and skip Lausanne, if you want another town nearby add Vevey.

Thanks so much swandav2000 and suze for your suggestions.
We will arrive in Geneva about 4pm so it will be nearly dark. I wanted to do the train from Montreux to Interlaken in the day light, but will think about looking at Vevey as an alternative. Many thanks.

I have a question for you, tpgt:

Having 'read soooo many posts', have you come upon any advice about a trip of this kind in the month of January? I'd be curious to know if your proposed itinerary is feasible during that time of year...

suze Jul 29th, 2007 07:38 PM

The train station is connectted to the Geneva airport. So it is extremely easy to catch a train out to Lausanne, Vevey, or Montreux with a 4pm landing.

terrific, thanks suze.
TuckH, there seems to be much more info about on travel in the summer, spring or autumn. Not very much about travel in the winter months. This is the main reason for travelling by train. I hope that our itinerary is feasible. I will have to let you know when we get back!

TuckH,

Why wouldn't the trip be feasible in January?? Trains are running, skiers are skiing, hotels are open. I've been to all these places in Nov or Jan, so I'm wondering --

Hi swandav:

>- Why wouldn't the trip be feasible in January?? -<

I just thought there might be a very good chance that it'd be snowing and, if not that, it might be foggy.

Remember, tpgt is looking for "a good way to see the countryside in comfort."

I know you've already had several useful replies; but you might get more if you re-post with 'Switzerland' in the title.

Hi again (TuckH),

Oh gosh, I'm such a fool for Switzerland, I love it even in the fog! And villages under fresh-fallen snow (if you get that lucky) . . . what better!
