Pleas advise on Hotel accomodation in Kiltimagh, Ballyvaughan and Oughterard for a solo traveller and her dog

I had booked a holiday to France in October but due to family commitments I have had to cancel. However I still have 5 days holiday and have decided to take my dog on holiday with me to the Renvyle House hotel in Connemara (I live in Belfast). Unfortunatly they can only accommodate me for 3 nights www.renvyle.com/on_site_leisure.asp but I have found 3 other dog friendly hotels in the greater area that can accommodate us for the other 2 nights.

The first hotel which is the most direct in terms of distance, is in Kiltimagh Co mayo www.cillaodain.ie I don't know anything about this town but near Knock - anyone know it? The hotel says it has music on a Saturday night (which is one of my nights)It says it is a piano bar - anyone know if that is quiet piano music which I would love or a piano singsong which I would hate?

The next is in Ballyvaughan www.hylandsburren.com I have never been to Co Clair and think this would be good walking area and also a new area for me. This hotel has mixed reviews on tripadvisor but as I like peace and quiet is it likely to be noisy on a Saturday night in October?

My favorite is Curarevagh House Hotel in Oughterard as it resembles the Renvyle and has a reputation for good food which is very important. However it is very clumbersome to get to from Belfast (quicker to go to Ballyvaughan which is further south). Also, as I have never been to this area of Connermara what is the scenery like?

I like to walk, view lovely vistas and eat good food if that helps.

Thank you

Helen

I stayed at Hyland's Burren for a couple of nights. I had booked for 7 but left after 2. It's very friendly, good pub, right in center of village but it gets the noise from the street. If you could get one of the new rooms at the top of the hotel you'd be fine. I would have stayed a week if I could have managed the stairs. It's the 3rd floor. It really was nice up there. Have a great trip. Joan

Knock is a nice town on the center road from Clare to Waterford, Cambe.

There is a town centre full of nice pubs.

If you are still looking for a hotel, we have one of the most extensive list on our site.

Have fun,

Jim

Helen, I am envious that you are able to take your dog with you. I wish there were an easy way to take mine with me when I travel abroad, especially to Ireland.

The scenery in Connemara is as lovely as other parts of Ireland, though the parts I saw were not as spectacular. I drove from Oughterard up toward Westport, passing Kylemore Abbey (sic?) and some of the most peaceful, brilliant scenery I've seen. It actually reminded me a bit of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in the U.S., with brooks rushing out of hills and lush green fields. It's hard to describe except to say that I had such a content, peaceful feeling driving through that part of the country. I think it would be ideal for short hikes. I hope you enjoy it.

Thank you all for your replies. I have booked 2 nights at Currarevagh House hotel in Oughterard and 3 nights at Renvyle House Hotel. Both hotels are country houses with a reputation for very good food and both welcome dogs as guests.

Irishiningo, this is the first time I have taken my dog on holiday with me as I usually go abroad and she stays on my sisters farm. I am really looking forward to it and we could both be doing with the exercise. I hope she behaves!

I would like to day trip to the Burren and Cliffs of Moher from Oughterard one day. Does anyone know if the terrain at the cliffs is safe for a small dog (Cavalier King Charles)? I will have her on a lead. Also, any recomended walks in the area.

Thanks

Helen
