Surfmom - I had reservations for two days at Cruden Bay but couldn't talk the group into going that way. What a disappointment as it has such a good reputation among travelling golfers. Glad you got to play it.

One trip I took two golfing friends (I didn't play myself) and booked them rounds at Prestwick, Troon, Macrahanish, North Berwick, the Old Course, Carnoustie, Cruden Bay, and Dornoch - plus they played Crail and a couple of others -- and -- we rented a cottage SW of Beauly that had a little 9 hole course at the bottom of the garden. After a long day of sightseeing - they could come home and play a round for free (golf was included w/ the cottage).

Their favorites were Dornoch (they played 2 rounds), the Old Course (it was a brilliant, calm, warm day so they didn't get the full effect) and Cruden Bay.

I know this is an old thread but since it has been revived. My sister and I have been talking about playing 9 holes while we are in Scotland. She is an average female golfer, I have been taking lessons this year but way below her level. We will be three days in Islay. I have sent an email to the Machrie course, is it approachable for beginners? Any other suggestions in Islay. Just want to play golf in Scotland, not after one of the brand name courses. A

Machrie would be a lovely place for her to play. It's not cheap tho'. You will have to watch out for the sheep (and use old balls- with lots of spares in your bag.

There are no other golf courses in Islay. If you want to know other things about Islay, open another thread or email me, I suggest.
