You know, I think the original poster wanted a serious answer as opposed to a debate about bringing these devices on a European trip. By the way, back in the days when I schlepped kids on home exchanges, a Game Boy was effective anesthesia for young boys on long flights. The practical answer is to check the charger and see if it is dual voltage. If it is, all you will need is a plug adapter to plug into Italian sockets. If it is not you will need a converter and the plug adapter. Most things are dual voltage these days.
Adults often bring a laptop and/or an iPAQ as a toy. For kids a play station can fill the same purpose--and provide diversion when travel crankiness sets in. It is just a question of not getting obsessed with such games.
