Planning trip to Rome, Venice & Sorrento - need some help
 

Hi

I am planning a holiday to Rome, Venice and then Sorrento for next May and need some initial help.

The plan is to spend - 4 night in Rome, 4 nights in Venice and 6 or 7 nights in Sorrento (for a week of relaxation).

We are flying to Rome from London and plan to fly out of Sorrento. Questions are:

- What is the closest airport to Sorrento?
- How can I get from Rome to Venice and Venice to Sorrento - is there a specific trian line?

Venice 4 nights
fly Venice to Naples (Alitalia)
boat from Naples to Capri (stay 2 nights)
boat from Capri to Positano (stay 4 nights)
ferry from Positano to Naples; train Naples to Rome
Rome (stay 4 nights)
fly BA from Rome to London, back to NY

Naples is the closest airport to Sorrento.

Did this same trip in 9/01.
Flew into Rome,
Trained to Venice
Fley Venice to Naples
Hotel had driver pick us up at airport to take us to Sorrento
Trained back to Rome for final night before flight out of Rome.
You could also consider flying out of Naples(?).

This was a great trip but you length of stay in Sorrento sound better. We loved it.

You can fly Venice/Naples on www.volareweb.com for much less than taking a train.

I would fly into Venice, train to Rome, train to Naples - hire a limo to drive me to Sorrento (or other town on the AC) and have that driver take me to the Naples airport to fly home.

That way you arrive in a pleasant, relatively quiet town, see the more hectic Rome, relax on the AC.

Are you planning on early or late May?

An open-jaw ticket would be best. My suggestion would be to fly into Venice and out of Rome, with the week in the South sandwiched in the middle. I happen to like the change of pace of breaking up cities with the countryside.

We were in Sorrento a few years ago and I guess we weren't there enough to really "discover" it. But we truly fell in love with the smaller Amalfi Coast towns--Positano Ravello,Amalfi--and Capri. Given the choice, I would rather stay on the AC in Positano or Ravello for four nights and Capri for two nights, rather than Sorrento for the entire time.

We also like the Amalfi Coast better than Sorrento. Sorrento is convenient to several sights, but it really has become a package tour town.

Not that it is terrible (well, some parts are now), but I think towns on the Amalfi Coast are preferable--as Lorac suggested.
