planning trip to Andalucia

how would you apportion 5 or 6 nights between Seville, Cordova and Granada? are there side trips in the region that are doable by train or bus, or that make it worth renting a car? thanks

Cordoba is a day-trip from Sevilla. With only 5 to 6 nights, it's four in Sevilla, with the day-trip to Cordoba, and 2 nights in Granada.

Forget the car and take the train.

Robert is exactly right. With 5 or 6 nights you have hardly enough time for Seville, Granada and Cordoba. Forget the side trips.

that is so helpful - thanks, so maybe 4 nights in Seville with one day being a day trip to Cordoba and then 2 nights in Granada. Must admit that my highest priority would be seeing the Alhambra. how hard would it be to get a train or bus back to somewhere in Portugal which is the other half of the trip and our end point?

Cordoba can be a day trip from Sevilla, but IMO merits 2 days for itself. Can you extend your time in the area?

If the Alhambra is your highest priority in the area (and it was for me, too), be sure to reserve both day and night tickets in advance. I was glad to see it in the day before my evening visit.

Enjoy!

TAP has direct flights from Sevilla to Lisbon and Iberia has some very inexpensive connecting flights from Granada to Lisbon. There are also flights to Porto.

Train service is one a day only, but from Madrid.

You can take the bus from Sevilla (7+ hours) for about €44/person, one-way, but flying Iberia is nearly as cheap. The TAP flight is more expensive, but it only takes a little over one hour, and you gain one hour in the process.

The train between Granada and Sevilla stops in Cordoba so you may also want to consider stopping in Cordoba on your way between the two. We did a similar trip though we had 8 nights so did 2 nights Granada, 2 nights Cordoba and 4 nights Seville. Here is a link to my trip report along with pictures that you may find helpful:

Reserve tickets for the Alhambra as early as you can. I waited until a month before my trip and was unable to get tickets for the daytime.

The questions about a car for side trips to some of the smaller villages in the area is moot - you have no time for any. So stick with the trains or buses.

Is it 5 nights or 6?? If it's 5 nights, then you may even want to drop Cordoba OR Granada.

If it's 6 nights, then I agree w/ others: 4 nights in Seville with a (1/2 day) day trip to Cordoba and 2 nights in Granada.
