Planning trip, need advice
Hi, I ran across this forum and noticed some pretty helpful advice, and was wondering if any of you could help me out. Im travelling to Europe for my first time in March to visit my girlfriend who is studying abroad near Venice, Italy. I'm going to meet her in Venice after spending a couple days on my own in Rome. We plan on spending the next day in Venice, and then take either a night train to Salzburg or take the early morning train on a Sunday. I'm looking for opinions on whether to do the night train to Salzburg, or wait until the morning. I could save a night in a hotel by doing the night train, but since its my first time in Europe, we wouldnt mind taking in the scenery along the way. The early morning train gets us into Salzburg around noon-1pm...so my question is, is the scenery worth it? We are only planning on spending until the next night there until we take a Ryanair flight(10pm)to the British Isles for the rest of the trip. Should we try to maximize our time in Salzburg by taking a night train, or wait until the next morning and travel during the day? I can't imagine getting a good nights rest on a train...
Also, how much will a ticket generally cost without a rail pass? I cant seem to find any prices on the sites ive checked. I'd appreciate any input..or alternative suggestions for our itinerary. |
The scenery is spectacular! I'd recommend taking a day train to see the Alps, lakes and countryside.
Have you used the German train site: www.bahn.de Good website, easy to use and lots of information. Hope this helps a little. mom |
Hi, Welcome to this forum.
I think the scenery would be worth taking the day train rather than the overnight. Salzburg is a lovely town, and fairly small and compact. You could get a good feel for it by having one and a half days there. Also, it would give you an extra night in Venice, which could be a plus (despite the extra hotel cost). Hope you have a great trip! SusanEva |
I agree with taking the train in the early morning. That scenery is spectacular - not something you want to just pass through in the dark. As for the hotel cost, I'd think that would be worth every penny right about then, wouldn't it? :-X

Welcome to the forum.
Please see my second reply on this thread: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34701747 If everyone put this kind of message header on their questions, as you have... ...it would be a bit like walking into the library, and seeing shelf after shelf filled with rows and rows of volumes... and on the spine of each one of them, you would see "This is a book". Best wishes, Rex |
