Yes, I've visited the COnciergerie. It's a very historic building, after all, not only due to the position it served, but I think it is about the oldest building in Paris (if not THE oldest) still standing. I am very interestd in French architectural history and history, in general.

I have no idea if it is "worth it" to others. I really don't know how to say what would make it worth it or not. It's an old dark building with a lot of empty space, you know what it is, it isn't going to be some decorated palace like Versailles.

If you don't have time, I would guess it would not be a must-see to most people.

Interesting and easy to see the oldest extant public clock in Paris which is on the exterior wall of the conciergerie--on the corner. It's the 2nd at the site, this one dates from the 16th C.

parisbyphoto, thanks for the info! mtabga? MMMMMM! sounds amazing. Someone recommended a Tunisian bakery on Rue de la Harpe... I'll be checking that one out since we'll be close by.

Christina and Cath, the Conciergerie does sound interesting... but I think you're right Christina -- I'll leave it as a "second-tier" choice for my itinerary (we'll obviously be right there... depends on how we are on time!)

For the Conciergerie, you can get a combo ticket for it and St Chapelle.
Interesting architecture, and its tourist claim to fame is holding cell of Marie Antoinette during her trial, after which she left by cart to go to Place de la Concorde to lose her head. She was only there for 10 weeks, and I believe her cell is a re-creation, but it is true that this building was the main prison durign the revolution and few who entereed ever left alive (for long)

Hi - what a lot of replies! just a couple more things though! The Ritz hotel is closing for refurb this summer so check it out before you go. You mentioned hiring a bike - why not try a bike tour with Bike About Tours Paris - set up by two Kiwi ex-pats whose mission is to show English-speakers the real Paris. They can show you the lesser-known charms of the city – quaint little side streets, the guides' favourite bakeries, unexpected history lessons (like the mini cannon ball still stuck in the side of a church wall from Revolution days)...exclusive access to a beautiful "secret" courtyard garden behind one of Paris's more well-known streets http://www.bikeabouttours.com/ you'd need to book in advance - they are very popular! Have a fab time, Janine at The Good Life France
