Meant to say THANKYOU to swandav especiall for the: Main street, Villeneuve photo, boy does that one capture the mood of the Swiss lakeside towns!

And WAY back up the thread about the day trip, when we went to Gruyeres we visited the castle which was fantastic (truly a highlight for me) and had lunch in a traditional style place (meat & cheese board, carafe of white wine). We were in a car from Vevey though not by train and didn't do anything with chocolate or cheese either there (well we did eat some at lunch!)

I think that Gruyeres day will be fun, might go up in morning to avoid crowds, then walk to the Jogne gorge and lake, and bus back. I think that gives us a nice mix. I love seeing the little towns en route, bus is better for that. Will never forget squeezing through the streets of Vicosoprano in a full sized bus, amazing.
