PLANNING A TRIP TO PRAGUE AND VIENNA
WE WERE GOING TO GO ON A 8 DAY 6 NIGHT GATE 1 TOUR TO VIENNA, PRAGUE, AND BUDAPEST FOR ONLY $849 WITH AIR, UNFORTUNATLY IT IS BOOKED UP AREADY. WOULD ANYONE KNOW OF ANY OTHER INEXPENSIVE TOUR OR CAN ANYONE OFFER ANY SUGGESTIONS ON DOING IT MYSELF. I REALLY WANT TO GO TO VIENNA AND PRAGUE, BUDAPEST IS NOT AS IMPORTANT TO ME. THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

Hello lfm1955,
I have never gone on an escorted tour, so I cannot comment on them from personal experience. Sure, I've gone a day tours and half-day tours, but never have bought a package deal in which air fare, hotels and ground transportation were included.
When I saw your question, I did have a vague recollection of having stumbled on a website that compared different tour companies and that included a forum in which some travellers asked questions and others provided responses regarding escorted tours on which they had been. I did a Google search for it and found it:
http://www.affordabletours.com/
Although the website is called Affordable Tours, I'm not quite sure why it chose that name. It includes the Rocky Mountaineer, a train journey that I would hardly call affordable.
I did a word search for Gate 1, and found a discussion thread in which there were some very critical remarks about Gate 1:
http://bb.affordabletours.com/viewto...ighlight=gate1
I have acquaintances who have enjoyed escorted tours with Globus, Trafalgar and Insight.
I have visited Prague, Vienna and Budapest. It's easy to travel amongst the 3 cities by train. The Fodors "Destination" notes on Prague and Vienna are very helpful, IMO, while the ones on Budapest are not helpful, again IMO. There are many previous discussion threads about accommodations in these cities, if you do a word search here at Fodors.
In the amount of time you're thinking of spending, I think you'd be better off visiting 2 cities rather than 3, so I like your idea of visiting Vienna and Prague only. That is not to say I don't like Budapest -- in fact I love it -- but I think 3 cities in that time would be a bit too rushed, for my taste at least.
Prague and Vienna both are easy cities to visit. They both have excellent public transportation systems and almost all of the attractions that are of interest to a first time visitor are within walking distance of the centre of the city. The exception is Schoenbrunn Palace in Vienna, which is too far out for walking, but is accessible by public transportation.
Most people who interact with tourists in Prague and Vienna can speak English.
Hope that helps.

ditto Czech airlines
I have files on V and P; if you'd like to see them, email me at [email protected]
Consider flying between the two cities to save time

I don't know if these companies have those cities, but they are cheap tours or packages, so check them out:
www.go-today.com
www.offpeaktraveler.com
www.laifertours.com
Laifer specializes in that region.

I can speak for Laifer Tours, as I did their Prague and Vienna package in October. I highly recommend them, and would use them again in a heartbeat. Click on my name to find my trip report if you need more info.

I'm using www.nordiquetours.com for my trip to Prague next March. We're paying 1746 for two people (leaving ATL) which includes six nights hotel, r/t and we will be staying in the city center.

I used Urzsula at affordablepoland.com to book my recent trip to Prague. This was only hotel and airfare, not an escorted tour. However, they do offer combo trips, such as Prague/Vienna. Please check out their website.
