I agree - that's why there's not much desire on our part to see the Amalfi Coast now. Maybe later or without them.
...
We expect that the hotel in Naples will let us leave our bags there, but because the night train leaves from Salerno, we were thinking to perhaps take the train to Salerno, spend the day there and then leave from there (if the station has a left luggage). We will have to figure that out.

thanks! I need to find these trains!!!
You can also get the night train in Naples, which would be more convenient, unless you want to see Salerno. Actually there are two night trains. One, the 796, leaves Naples at 9:28 PM and gets to Torino Porta Nuova at 8:10. It takes a route along the coast and makes 16 intermediate stops. The other, the 798, takes a longer inland route and makes 9 intermediate stops. It leaves Naples at 9:20 PM and arrives at Torino Porta Nuova at 9:20 AM. My experience with night trains would induce me to choose the longer route, because I tend to wake up at stops.

At this time, the schedules for these trains are only published through early December. You can see the details by using a date in November on the Trenitalia site https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html
You have to use the Italian station names. You won't want Napoli and Torino. It will give you a selection of stations in each city. In both cases, choose "Tutte le stazioni" (all stations), because sometimes night trains don't stop at the main stations in a city.
To see prices, you'll need to enter the number of adults and children (up to and including age 11). Then, for each person, there's a drop down menu showing the type of accommodation. The heading is something like "posto a sedere". Assuming you want to share a cabin for four, select "cucetta comfort quadrupla-cabina intera" for each person. There's a discount for children. It would be 50% if they were occupying a seat, but it's less than that for a cabin. Assuming both your children are under 12, the total cost was around €160 on my trial reservation.
There's no guarantee the schedules or prices won't be changed when the new schedules come out. I don't know when that will be for Intercity night trains. The high speed schedules are already out, and the regional schedules usually come out very late.
I often recommend www.thetrainline.com for non-native Italian speakers, because the Trenitalia English language website is only half translated, but today that site seems to be down today.
