Hello Lewis: I have made five trips to Romania doing
consulting work. Cable TV/Telephone. I have traveled
over the entire country by trains, planes,a nd auto's. It is a magnificent Country with wonderful
people. I recently returned from spending 4 12
months living in Bucuresti and in Transylvania. Any
specific questions you have I would be happy to
answer. Bucuresti is a nice city with 2.2 million
people. The entire country is 23 million. In Nov.
1996 they elected their first pro-demcoracy president, Mr. Constantinescu, who is a former
college professor. Economy is getting better but they still have a long way to go. When I first
visited there the currency was 3000 lei to the USD.
In June this year was about 6800 lei to USD so
devaluation is hurting them. Many people speak
English especially younger folks and most Romanians
like Americans. It is a great Country and you should
enjoy your visit. Regards, Ed Musser

Message: Romania - an amazing beautidul and (still) undiscovered country. I would like to
suggest to you an address in Romania which can be of help
while touring the most beatiful part of it - the Northern
Moldova with its most famous painted monasteries. The
address belongs to a family which has a lovely villa in
Campulung Moldovenesc (in the mountains) and it is happy to
accommodate up to 5 families and offer meals based on
organic/Eco food. (some pictures at
http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/3564/eco.htm) Fam.
Albu Viorel Str. Ciprian Porumbescu nr. 16 5950, Campulung
Moldovenesc Jud. Suceava Romania tel: +40 303 11585 They
offer double rooms, very clean, with TV (satelite),
bathroom, balcony, private garden, playground for children,
breakfast included. The price is 25 USD per room/per night.
Breakfast is based on organic food (they have chickens -
fed with grass and maize only - they have neighbors which
are delivering fresh milk from their farm, lots of
vegetables in the garden, fruits in the trees, etc.) They
can also organize tours at the monasteries with their
private car - they both speak English! The small city of
Campulung Moldovenesc is situated in the most attractive
region of Romania (Bucovina) - at just 15 km away of the
famous Byzantine Monasteries. For whoever happens to be in
the region - their house is open. For more information you
can either contact me or them. I am living in The
Netherlands but the reason I am recommending you their
address is because I have been there and I felt great. Pure
hospitality, cleanliness and beautiful nature and
mountains. Mirela Z.

Dear Sjoerd,

What a good idea. I often admire your messages on the net, and it will be an honour to stand you lunch. Shall we say 1pm at a table near the door of the Caru cu Bere, Str Stavropoleos 3, just east of bthe southern end of Callea Victorei ? I'll have with me a copy of the magazine "New Scientist".

Ben Haines

Ben, I will be in Bucharest for work from Tuesday 10 April - Thursday 12 April. My office is VERY close to Caru cu Bere, but I expect to have a very busy schedule of meetings, so unfortunately I can't really make appointments now. I will e-mail you my mobile phone no.
