Plane ticket question

Is it at all possible to transfer a non-refundable plane ticket to another person (it's the same last name) because the original ticket-holder can't make the trip?

No

Don't believe so, since the airline will ask for an id which must match the ticket. I have heard of it occuring when both have the exact same name (i.e. father & son etc), but even then I think it is not quite legal.

Perhaps I misstated -- I guess I wanted to know if the airline can put the ticket in another person's name, not that another person would try to use it with the original ticket-holder's name.

I think the previous posters understood that. The answer is probably no. However, if it's there's a good reason for the cancellation/change, you could try to play on their emotions!

Thanks!

sera,
In a word, no unless death or sickness (backed up w/medical proof pax. can't fly) is the reason.

I can definitely tell you that Delta won't change a ticket due to military orders. They will refund her money with a lot of red tape, but they won't let us substitute another passenger (which means to get a replacement on our trip, we have to pay several hundred dollars more for a flight to Cancun...not going to happen!). I really don't understand why airlines won't take a name change..charge a nominal fee...the seat is already sold, so what diff does it make!

Anne

The general answer is no, but definitely check with the airline. Midwest Express will let you rename the ticket with a bit of red tape... letters, etc.

Funny thing is, years ago, I picked up airline tics from my travel agent and didnt even look at them. When I was on the plane I looked at the return ticket and both tics were made out to a totally different client of the TA's.
I flew under an assumed name w/o even knowing it, and it was even a name of a different gender. How times have changed.
