Plaka restaurant

We are in Athens for 1 night which happens to be the last night of our trip and my girlfriends birthday. I would like to take her to a good restaurant with atmosphere, not too stuffy, good food etc.. not for honeymooners.

Pls let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is a bit more than you wanted to spend but Daphne's is a very good choice. We were there 4 weeks ago. The main courses range from 22 - 35 euros. It was very good.

That is a bit more than I wanted to spend. How was the atmosphere. Usually the higher priced places are a little quiet. Thanks anyway.

Anyone else.

I, too, loved Daphne's restaurant but, yes, it is quieter, "classier", and you won't find a rambunctious crowd there.

Probably just walk around Plaka and find someplace that appeals ... be warned that more "lively" is going to be more "touristy", with shills in front persuading you to come in.

Kidathneon & Ariadnou streets (sp?) are the "cross roads" of Plaka ... start there and fan out.

I really liked Taverna Thespis on Odos Thespidos 18, enough to go there twice in 6 days. Outdoor taverna, Acropolis view, simple DELICIOUS fresh food & appetizers.

But if you're looking for dancing Greeks breaking dishes, it's probably going to be a staged tourist joint with fake atmoshere and mediocre food.

A good idea is the' FILISTRON' ON APOSTOLOU PAVLOU new pedestrian walkway(wich leads you the acropolis entrance).
Ask for it, and you' ll get one of the best views of the Acropolis and the Agora.
You'll sample(for 20 eur per person) small dishes of greek delicacies(mezze) with ouzo/wine or beer...and then continue, for a drink in one of the nearby music cafes like the'STAVLOS' my favourite.

In plaka my favourite-not known by tourists- is the XINOS TAVERN wich is the most traditional tavern in plaka with mummy's receipes.
for 15 euros per person you will have also 2 singers guitars playing greek songs and the atmosphere is authentic greek and warm...
continue for a last drink at CAFE MELINA dedicated to the famous actress Melina Mercouri.Very romantic!!!

Sheila, Tom and I agree. But I knew it might be a bit much. We stayed away from Plaka as we did not want to experience th "touristy" type places. Good luck.

Thanks to all for the info. There are some good suggestions here.

Hi Sheila,

I loved the Psaras Fish Grill. It had great atmosphere... chairs spilling over onto the cobble-stoned walkway. Great food, wine and service. Another really good choice is the Taverna Kouklis. It's rather traditional and has an authentic fun atmosphere (not the tacky tourist type). Instead of ordering one main dish, you create your meal from several mezedes (small dishes like tapas), from a large variety of whatever they happen to be offering that evening. It's very fun getting to try tons of different things.
