Places to visit staying in Como
I am planning to visit Como , in April , and want to know if it is better to stay there or in Lucerne , I have some opinions where Como is better as a place to stay and visit around ,also need to know any places to visit from there , any suggestions ?

Two very very different type places - Como is on Lake Como, one of the nice Italian lakes but in no way a mountain paradise if looking for that.
But similar to Lucerne on lovely Lake Lucerne - each lake has several intersting sights around them - Como - famous Bellagio and other lakeside gems and gardens. Lucerne IME has many more and varied day trips - including to Engleberg and an Alpine paradise just a hour or so from Lucerne by train - take the unique revolving gondola up to Mt Titlis and a land of perpetual sea and ice: https://www.google.com/search?q=mt+p...HbEvARoQsAQIHA Nothing like this near Como: Mt Titlis: https://www.google.com/search?q=mt+t...HTb1B8AQsAQIHA Also on Lake Lucerne is Mt Pilatus - one of the thrillingest trains goes up it from Alpnachstad on the lake - take a boat or train there from Lucerne. And there is the classic boat ride down the fjord-like part of the lake to Fluelen, part of the William Tell scenic boat/train excursion and also Mt Rigi - mountain train from Vitznau to summit known for its vast panoramic views for miles over the spiny ridge of central Switzerland. I think the sites around Lucerne are much more riveting than those on Lake Como but others may demure - Switzerland is also a lot more expensive than Italy across the board. If staying in Switzerland check out some kind of train pass - great info on Swiss trains and transports in Lucerne area- www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.rticksteves.com. Lake Como has locally sold boat passes that are great - only by boat can you see both sides of the lake. Milan of course is an easy day trip from Como if funky weather sets in - not unusual at that time of year. Como is a nice city I enjoyed staying there very much but many would rather stay in a Bellagio or small lakeside town. Lucerne itself has several neat sights and is one of the most gorgeous cities in Europe. I'd chose Lucerne but again others will favor Como. |
My choice would be Lucerne, hands down, and especially in April.

I should have asked what kinds of thing you wanted to do while there.
|
Week before and after Easter in Italy is I understand a high season - not sure about lakes as the weather there can be really fickle at that time of year I think - in Lucerne visiting mountain tops cold don't hurt.
|
The week before Easter isn't any sort of high season, but the week after, since many schools have a sort of spring break, is busier, especially in the "art cities" of Italy. I don't think any time in April is high season on Lake Como.

I would stay in the lake Como area. April is a great time to visit, because it wouldn't be as crowd. You can check out the post on the blog about my trip to lake Como: http://russianblogger.me/milan-to-lake-como-trip/. So pretty there!

The two are not that far apart really by train - do you have time to spend time in both Lucerne and Como?
|
Thanks to all , I am spending 3 days in Como , and wanted to take the funicular , is there any parking nearby , I am traveling by car .
Thanks |
You say April without mentioning whether at the beginning or end although your latest posting states you are choosing Como. This is probably the better choice as in April the weather can be decisive. Lucerne is essentially north of the Alps and the weather can still be wintery rather than spring like.
You mention taking the funicular. The only funicular in Como is the one that goes up to Brunate. Parking near the funicular is limited and expensive. Where are you planning to stay? If in Como your hotel may have its own parking and you can walk to the funicular. If not there are other options based on your hotel location. |
Thanks , my hotel has parking , my question is if there is any parking near the funicular , so I can go from my hotel by car , the hotel is not in como city , so I need to take the car to get there , and I am travelling there from april 14 till 16
Thanks |
Tell me where you are actually staying to give you your best options.
