Places to visit between Venice and Florence

My wife and i will be flying into Venice and out of Florence for 12 days during X-mas. Does anyone have suggestions on cities/places to visit on the way down to Florence? Also, do you have any suggestions for places to stay? Thanks.

What is your budget per night for places to stay?
How are you getting from V to F?
Car? Train? Bus?

We will probably travel by train. Do you think a rental car would provide more flexibility? Our budget is 100 euro per nite. Thanks, we will check out Bologna.

I wouldn't use the train as from Venice to Bologna it takes about 1 hour. From Bologna you can take local trains to go to Parma, Ravenna, Modena. I agree with Fabio: Bologna (and also Parma and Modena) are famous for home made pasta, Parmigiano Reggiano and the excellent Prosciutto di Parma. Worth a stay at least to splurge in the original products.

ooops I just realized that I wanted to say that I WOULD use the train because it's just about 1 hours from one city to another.
