Places to stay on the canals?

My husband & I will only be spending 1 night in Amsterdam and are looking for a reasonbly priced (under $200) B&B or small-ish hotel on the canal (preferably with a canal view). It's our first time to Amsterdam so don't know the areas at all! We aren't much into night-life but would like to be close to some decent eateries. Can you suggest any specific places?

If you do a search under Amsterdam you should find several recommendations for hotels. My favorite is the Canal House. We stayed in a large double room for 130 Euros.

I say the Estherea Hotel..Very nice on the Singel Canal.

I second, heartily, the Canal House; it feels like a large B and B; and though some of the rooms are quite small, we had one on the top floor complete w/ the beams and a wonderful view and bathroom. Be careful, there is also a very ordinary hotel with almost the same name. I think the one we are recommending to you is on the Kiesersgracht but not sure; it's around the corner from the Anne Frank House.

The Canal House sounds lovely, but it is already booked for the night we'll be there. Thanks for the other recommendations! I'll check into them!

I second the Ambassade, if it's within your budget. A plus with the Ambassade is the very nice spa, Koan Float, located on the ground floor of one of the buildings which make up the hotel (reception is on the ground floor of one of the other buildings). I looked at rooms in the Toren and the Canal House but liked Ambassade the best.
Another choice is the very small and charming B&B called t'Hotel on Leliegracht. I had a wonderful 2-night stay there. The proprietors of t'Hotel own two side-by-side on Leliegracht. One of the buildings is their residence/antique shop and the other is the B&B. Be forewarned, there is no elevator.

Another choice is the very small and charming B&B called t'Hotel on Leliegracht, on the edge of the Jordaan. I had a wonderful 2-night stay there. Be forewarned, there is no elevator, and the stairs are steep - but that's Amsterdam!
