We would like the hotel/pensione to be well located and would like to spend between $200-$300 for four of us. Thanks.

I would start by checking www.venere.com and www.tripadvisor.com. Once you've made your short lists, do searches here by the names of the hotels or start a new post asking if anyone has stayed in the hotels you're considering. Mention the hotels in your post title.

Also consider if you want a quad room, or two doubles. Quads would probably be quite small. Would you consider an apartment? Check the Santa Croce apartments at www.florencevillas.com

I believe you can arrange to rent for less than a week, if the time of your visit is open on their schedule.

In Florence we stayed at the Casci Hotel in a quad room. It was actually quite large, which of course surprised us. The hotel is in a great location, and the owners are so friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay there again!

In Venice we did not care for our quad room at all. It was the Hotel Canada and just in case you come across that name, do not stay there. Too many issues to even list.

We stayed at the Room-in-Venice B&B in Venice last year (4 of us, 2 couples.) Our Daughter and her friend stayed at Locanda Cà Del Brocchi- Venice. Both places were great and very affordable (for Venice). Ours was small but very nice. Her's was bigger and more hotel-like. Both had great locations. Here are the websites if you are interested:
http://www.roominvenice.com
and www.cadelbrocchi.com.
While in Tuscany we stayed outside of the village of Pistoia at AGRITURISTICA BARBICAIO. They were awesome, treated us like family. 8 of us stayed in a little villa overlooking the Tuscan valley. Total cost per day - $125 for all of us!! 4 rooms, 2 kitchens, 3 bathrooms, unbelievable. However, you will have to be willing to drive to stay there as it is up in the foot-hills about 45 minutes from Florence. Their website is: http://www.agriturismobarbicaio.it/cascia.htm

PS: if you stay there, stay at the main house. the "mill" site is beautiful also but it is quite a bit off the beaten track (unless of course that is what you are lookinf for). .
