Places to Stay in Sorrento
 

Does anyone have recommendations for places to stay in Sorrento? There are four us us going in April and we'll be there for approx four nights. We want to stay in Sorrento as it's central within our itinerary. We don't want to spend too much but we're not really looking for budget either! : )

The Michaelangelo is in a good location and is family run. We loved it.

I loved the Hotel Minerva.

I've also stayed at Il Nido, but it's a few miles out of town (free shuttle). Take a look at www.sorrentoinfo.com for hotels.

Thank you all so much! In looking closer at the area, I'm trying to decide which section of town we want to be in. We want to be in town but not on too busy of a street - not sure if that's possible but I'll check.

We stayed at the Bellevue Syrene and it was excellent. Five minute walk into the center of town and right on the water with a balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples.

We stayed at the Hilton - a nice walk, we liked the neighborhood, local shops etc. Accessible to the train station to go to Pompeii etc. Fabulous breakfast buffet. Got a great rate on the internet.

The Hilton also has a wonderful pool. Magnificent views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius.

Sorrento was a lot of fun. But better not to stay in the noisier tourist areas. Take a look at the Hilton.

We have stayed at two different hotels in Sorrento.

In 2001: The Grand Capodimonte, Via Capo. It is about a 7-8 minute walk into the center of town up a hill (not steep). Our priority was getting a room with a view of the Bay of Naples. Lovely public areas, five swimming pools and nice guest room. The staff was professional, but reserved and accommodating.

In 2006: The Grand Hotel Aminta, Via Nastro Verde, which, in my opinion, is a long walk to town. There is a public bus stop directly in front of the hotel, plus the hotel provides an infrequent shuttle service in-and-out of town.

The public areas in the Aminta are lovely, but the guest rooms we stayed in were plain and utilitarian (we had two rooms), we did not get rooms with a view, and a few clerks at the front desk were unfriendly. The pool area is nice with an outdoor service bar.

Both hotels provided a buffet breakfast in their room rate.

Conclusion: I would stay at the Grand Capodimonte again, I would not stay at the Grand Hotel Aminta.

Have any of you Sorrento experts visited the town, or the Amalfi coast, in January/February/March? I know many places are closed but am considering a visit after a stay in Naples for next winter. I am thinking Sorrento would be better than AC during off season, no?

I was there the 3rd week in March, 3 or 4 years ago. Stayed in Sorrento, took the boat to Amalfi. It seemed everything as far as hotels, restaurants and shops, was open. Weather was great - jacket during the day, colder at night. There were only 6 passengers on the boat to Amalfi - which was great! One of the crew brought espressos around to all of us. The water wasn't rough, and boats were running on their full schedule for that time of year to various points up, down and around the area.

This is very far in advance, I know, but I am thinking about a trip early next year. We like to travel in January but could certainly go in March, before Holy Week. I am just exploring a few options and Naples/Sorrento or AC looks like a good possibility. I was there in late April years ago and remember it as being an ideal time; wasn't sure about earlier than that. Do not want to be faced with too many shuttered restaurants and shops...kind of defeats the whole purpose!

The week I was there was the week just before Easter. Next year, Easter falls early - March 23, '08.

This past October, we stayed 5 nights at the Antiche Mura in Sorrento - loved it! The location is perfect with excellent service...we were encouraged to stay there based on tripadvisor reviews.

I spent a week at the Michelangelo in 2002 and loved the location. The hotel is very clean and well-kept. Special mention should be made of Giuseppe, the bartender, who really makes a good drink (at unbeatable prices) and adds to that Italian hospitality like no one I've come across since.

Check out Hotel Vittoria. We stayed there and really liked the location also the food and service is good. Plus the price is reasonable. Our travel agent hooked us up there and we were very pleased. We parked the car and never drove it while we were there for 4 days. Trust me driving the Amalfi coast is SCARY! We drive everywhere and aren't wimps, but WOW. You can take other forms of transportation if you want to go outside of town and the hotel is very accommodating.
