Hard to say what the question is, but perhaps this is the answer...

Start here: http://www.berchtesgadener-land.com/home_e.htm . Then, click on "Lodging" at the left, then "B&B's" or apartments.

We have stayed at the Watzmann on three different trips. Very nice. Clean.

Martha: I've stayed at the Vier Jahrzeiten (Four Seasons) on two occasions and it is a fine family-owned and operated hotel with reasonable rates. It's right on what would be considered to be the "main drag" in town. Plenty of character, also.

You should find it on the website that Russ conveniently listed above.

Martha, you left a couple of 'questions' unanswered. I know you did not ask them, but -
1. Are you driving?
2. What is your knowledge of German?
Driving, risky, but well worth it - a short distance from the Austrian border, there is/was a little ,Gasthaus', located on the left of the highway/strasse, it was set back a little ways, but BEAUTIFUL, the river runs not far behind it. Check it out, you will(?) need some German.
scott

We stayed at the Hotel Schiffmeister, right on the lake (Koenigssee). Great hotel and a beautiful location. Especially handy if you want to take the boat out on the lake and hike around. It's a 15-20 minute taxi ride from the Berchtesgaden train station.

When in Berchtesgaden note the size of the train station. It is large for a small town. This was because it was expanded to accomodate Adolf Hitler on his visits. There are three large columns in the rear where he had private entrance and exit and did other Nazi VIPs. Interesting, I thought.

A bunch of people chimed in on this exact question a few months back. The majority of us suggested the Watzmann based on price, decor and location. Do a search here in Fodor's and you'll get more details.

We recently spent 3 days at the Hotel Schiffmeister on Lake Konigssee. It was absolutely delightful. If you can, request a room with a balcony facing the lake. We originally booked a room there for our last night in Germany, returning out of Salzburg early the next morning (about 30 minutes away). Most of our trip was planned with a week stay at an apartment in Inneralpbach, Austria which was delightful. We left several days open thinking that was the spontenaous thing to do (it has never worked for us). We looked around Berchtesgaden for a place to stay and just didn't feel like hiking up one street and down another, so we decided to head toward Lake Konigssee where we had plans to stay our last evening. We were so glad we did as it was just delightful and they were able to accomodate us the two extra evening.. Luckily we had asked for specific directions ahead of time or we never would have found this place, you need to drive down a road that appears to be a pedestrian walkway. The people were delightful, the food was excellent, and the sights were unbelievable. Will be glad to provide more information to anyone who would care to email me directly.
