Places of interest in UK
I am planning to visit UK for 7 days, arriving London in June 2013. Could someone please suggest few places of tourist attraction (Scotland, Manchester ??) which can be toured within 7 days and the mode of travel (road or rail ?). Since I have already been to London in the past, not much interest in spending more time in London this time. Would appreciate any assistance in suggesting an itinerary.

BMenon, what sort of thing interests you, castles, shops, museums, hiking, bike riding, horse riding, arts and crafts, gardens, steam trains, canals, industrial heritage, beaches, military, coal mines, football, rugby, cricket, literature, educations, etc etc etc

Have you been to London before? If not I would spend the week in London with maybe a day trip or two at most. Check out www.walks.com for ideas for day trips ( we always send our visitors on their excellent affordable day trips and walks!)

Sorry, missed that you had been to London!
Hmmm can you give us more info...too any options but since you are landing (and leaving from?) London perhaps you want to visit england with only 7 days? Some ideas Cotswolds Cornwall Dorset and Somerset South east england |
Thanks for the quick response. No specific interest, but castles, heritage sites, museums, shops, etc. would be of interest to name a few. Jamikins, thanks for the offer, but not London this time.

Most areas will provide those things. Do you want to travel by car or train? Stay in cities or countryside or a mix?
It may be worth spending some time with guidebooks or websites like below and see what grabs you. http://www.visitscotland.com/ http://www.visitengland.com/ee/ http://www.visitwales.co.uk/ With 7 days I would pick 1-2 areas that are close to each other...like say Yorkshire and the Lake District...so you don't waste a lot of time in transit as your time is limited! |
York, Leeds, Manchester, Lake District, Liverpool would be easy by train, lots of city sites ranging from about 1100 to 2013 AD

Hmmm. I'm currently reading Rough Guides "1000 Ultimate Travel Experiences - Make the Most of Your Time on Earth". 50 of them are in the British Isles - and that doesn't count more standard sights. You really need to do some more research yourself - the train will get you to much of England and Wales, and parts of Scotland.

Nice to see so much response within a short time. Thanks all. I prefer travel by train. Edinburgh, I was told, is a good tourist spot. Hope I can cover Manchester, York, Leeds and Edinburgh (in that order) within 7 to 8 days max.

If you want to do something like that fly into Edinburgh and out of London, or vice versa...otherwise you will waste the time and money backtracking...
