Place to stay in Venice...Help!
 

First trip to Venice with my wife. Staying 3 nights and want to stay near St. Marks. Looking for something on a canal but more modern(lobby restaurant/bar and wifi etc.) we are going in June and want to book as soon as I can. Looking to a place that wont bankrupt us!

What is your budget? Why do you want to stay near St. Marks? Are your open to staying in other areas?

yes, Venice is very walkable, so there is absolutely need need to stay near St. Marco if you don't particularly want to.

Locanda Orseolo is great but probably 200 euros a night (with large breakfast) these days. The forums here have lots of recommendations for locandas in various locations so I would search here but also tripadvisor.com and venere.com.

It was funny, I already inquired about this place and then logged on here to see his recommendation. Figured that to be a good sign. Now if anyone can tell me the best way to get from the Airport to this place...

I have stayed here and there are good directions on the website. We took the bus to Piazzale Roma and then the vaporetto to the San Marco Vallerosa stop. Use that stop for an easier walk thru San Marco to the apt. location.

I checked out several sites, including Slow Travel and the majority of reviews are great. Your link above is not an active link. I find it hard to understand a bad review from someone that has never actually stayed there before. I have been in constant contact with the owner and he is quick to respond as well as answer any questions I have had so far.

However,I do appreciate your insight...

qwovadis, being weird is fine, but being as weird as accosting Fodorites who have been around here longer than you are (like Bob and me) as "trolling apartment touts" is definitely not funny. Nor is spreading criminally silly "reviews" like the one you quoted above from slowtrav - another example that slowtrav is just not a serious website, or they would have deleted that utter nonsense in a second. Shame on you, qwovadis.

...and qwovadis: would you please provide the link to that supposed slowtrav quotation? I can't find it on their site! (Which may be the fault of their site... but doing a Google search "'beware of owner' site: slowtrav.com" gives 0 results, as well as "'beware of owner' site: slowtalk.com")

Could not agree more. No excuse for Qwovadis posts! He is well known for dropping these cut and run bombs.

I think that Quovadis' implication that Franco is some sort of tout for his preferred apartment is uncalled for, and rude.

Many participants on these boards recommend places where they have stayed - I've done so myself - and that hardly makes us touts.

This is quite comical...I am not a "professional" traveler and Was excited to get some much needed information from experienced travelers. I am taken back by the lack of respect some have for this website. believe it or not, people might actually find some of the information useful.I know now for future trips to rethink using a site like this to get information....
