Place to stay in Barcelona and Madrid Spain
Hi
We are a retired couple going to Barcelona and Madrid in the beginning of July. Having problems finding a decent inexpensive place to stay. All we saw look like a dorm. We don't want to spend much money on hotel where will be only coming to sleep, but comfortable beds are important. Looking for a clean and safe place to stay, for no more that $60.00/night for 4 nights. All suggestions greatly appreciated.
Happy New year and many new safe exciting trips in it.

Barcelona is very popular in the summer...
I am not sure there is much i. either city for45 euros ..perhaps some studen logging in BC???
Inexpensive hotels in Madrid are called hostels . I doubt you can find much in that range with AC.
The temp. in both cities will be in the 90s .

I was there in summer of 2012. Both places quite expensive. We stayed in some pretty pricey places, but spoke with some youth in both cities and saw the hostel in Madrid as we were curious as to what they looked like. My teenager wants to go backpacking through Europe soon. They are clean, and not very expensive. Very hot during this time of year.

It's probably obvious, and you may not have any choice, but if you can travel outside of July and August, the prices will be much better. Also, you may want to try looking for B&B's; they tend to be far less than hotels.

A room for $60.00/night would be a cheap hostel, which are available in both Madrid and Barcelona, but most offer only dormitory type rooms at that price point. It would be an adventure for someone just out of high school, but not quite what I would picture for a retired couple on the go.

One understands some travelers are on a tight budget and don't
have a problem being outside all day in hot weather...
I cannot think of a major European city where a clean, safe and comfortable logging( for seniors)
is readily available at such a low rate.
The time of" Europe on Five Dollars a Day " is no more.

Your budget is low.
This is the simple fact: You're looking at visiting cities the size of Chicago (Madrid) and Philadelphia (Barcelona) and seeking to pay flophouse prices for lodging. For that price, you will receive flophouse quality lodging if you can find anything (the 65E someone quoted above is pushing $90, already 50% more than your budget).
You may find some place(s) with clean rooms, but truly comfortable bedding (assuming this means a high quality mattress and support) won't be available at the rates you're wanting to pay.
Note that Madrid will likely have weather akin to what you'd find in Central Oklahoma - very hot and very dry. You will need AC.
