Pizza in Rome
Where is the best pizza in Rome?
What is the name of the pizza place at the square near the Vatican? Is is good? |
Well If you want to eat the original Italian Pizza you must come where I live in Campania. In Naples you can find thousand of pizzerie, but one of the best is Pizzeria Dante next to Piazza Dante.
In Rome they often make too "flat" paste and the mozzarella is not the original "Mozzarella Di Bufala Campana". But when I go in Rome i use to go next to Piazza del Popolo. The road parallel to the Corso is full of good Resturant |
AngelaFromItaly is right, insofar as Neapolitan and Roman pizzas are quite different, and no one from Naples will admit that a Roman pizza is good, and vice-versa.
A few possibles in Rome: Da Baffetto, Via del Governo Vecchio, 114 (Navona area) Da Francesco, Piazza del Fico, 29 (Navona area) Dar Poeta, Vicolo del Bologna, 45 (Trastevere; closed Monday) |
Oops: My apologies, Angel<b>o</b>!

Angelo - I wish I could visit your area - It sounds so wonderful! - we are only visiting for 4 days in Rome. We have had Neapolitan pizza here near Washington,DC USA - the restaurant has been certified by the DOC as a worthy Neapolitaian DOC. We love their pizza and wanted to get expert advice as to where to go since we are visiting such a short time. We leave next week and we are so excited!
Eloise: Thank you as well-we will try to visit at least one of your suggested places...which one is near the Vatican or near our hotel (Spanish Steps)? |
Da Baffetto is superb. It makes me hungry just to think about it!

Almans:
None of the three pizzerias I have suggested is near the Vatican or the Spanish Steps. Two are in the historic centre of Rome, however: the area around the Piazza Navona/Pantheon/Campo de Fiori, which you will presumably be visiting at some point. |
Almans - From Sandra Gustafson's 2005 edition of "Great Eats Italy" Rome section:
Best pizza in Spanish Steps area is <b>Pizzeria Al Leoncino</b> (Via del Leoncino, 28). <i>"Look for pizza, pizza, and more pizza at Al Leoncino, a knotty-pine pizzeria w/Formica tabletops & hooks around the walls to hold winter coats. The service is fast, the pizzas are inexpensive, the ambience is as informal as it gets, and the place is popular. What more can any Great Eater ask? The hardworking pizza chefs, wearing Fruit-of-the-Loom undershirts, cook crisp-crust creations in the wood-fired oven in full view of the diners. Romans know their pizza, so when it is good & cheap, expect to wait, especially here, as few other pizzerias in the area are open for lunch. The drinkable house wine sells for around 6€ a half-liter."</i> Best pizza in Vatican area is <b>Pizza Rustica Al Gracchi</b> (Via dei Gracchi, 7). <i>"At this take-out pizza stand, the pizza chefs & ovens work overtime, turning out big trays of lip-smacking pizza as fast as they can sell it. There are 30-40 pizzas made here on a revolving basis, but the simple margherita w/tomato & mozzarella is still the best-seller. Also available are rotisserie chicken & soft drinks. When you order, you choose the type & size of your slice from 12-15 varieties, which are then cut & sold by weight. A convenient pit stop for refueling, either before or after tackling the Vatican's 'D' plan: a 5-hr walking tour."</i> Hope this helps. Have a Great time! We're on our way to Rome again this coming October. @};- Lulu |
Hi almans -- You might want to check out this recent thread, as well:

Recently back from an Italy trip. Da Baffetto was indeed good pizza. It is always busy so may have to wait in line to get in, worth the wait. The owner is hilarious. There's actually 2 of them, can't comment on the other. Also liked Pizza Re which is near the Piazza Popolo area.

Thanks to all for this wonderful advice - I did look at the other thread and gained perfect insight - I look forward to eating pizza by the slice/weight (Pizza Rustica Al Gracchi when we see the Vatican)& the pizza oven pizza too (both Da Baffetto & Pizza Re!) I am so greatful!
