Pitigliano in Tuscany - Does it worth a one night stay?
 

Dear Fodorites,

I am thinking to stop in this city for one night this October on the way from Rome to Florence. We will not have a car and would like to use public transportation to get there (train and bus). Would you recommend spending a whole day and night there? If the answer is "Yes", I'd appreciate recommendation for accommodation and dining. Thank you in advance,

Check the travel times involved in using solely public trans.

I thought Pitigliano's history and ruins were very interesting, but we were not relying on public trans. Depending on why you are considering visiting the town, you may think it's worth the time and effort to stop for one night. I can't make that call for you.

Depart Roma Termini Station 8:07 ES-City train: 20 Euros
Arrive Orbetello Scalo 9:24

Connect to RAMA bus at 9:58 to Pitigliano (arrive 11:20).

There are also unreserved "regionale" trains from Rome to Orbetello and Albinia, which cost less than half of the reserved ES-City train, but the onward bus connections to Pitigliano are not as good.

The logistics become simpler if you rent a car. I would train to Orvieto, rent the car at the train station there and drive about an hour to Pitigliano. The only possible down side is the cost of a very short-term (24 hours?) car rental. You might consider dropping the car closer to Florence (like Siena or Arezzo) or even in Florence, but driving into Florence requires precise routing to avoid entering a no-traffic zone.

I am really interested in the Etruscan and Jewish history. Can you recommend any other places in Southern Tuscany to satisfy my interests?

Not southern Tuscany but northern Lazio, there are Etruscan tombs at Tarquinia, some with surviving wall paintings.

In central Tuscany, there is an excellent Etruscan museum in Volterra.

There's an impressive (and active) synagogue in Florence, Tempio Israelitico in the area north of the Duomo. I don't know much about it, but you might do some research on its history.
