Pisa stop-over...how much time to allow?

My husband and I will be traveling from CT to Greve (Chianti...SW of Florence) in one day. We will take the train from Monterosso to Pisa...possibly further.

How long should we allow for to take a quick tour to the leaning tower before heading on to Greve?

We want to see the leaning tower if possible, but need to allow for time to get to Villa Vignamaggio (in Greve) by 6:00 p.m.

What would the driving time from Pisa to Greve be? Is it easy to get lost doing this drive? If so, what would be a closer/alternate pick-up sight for a car? (We are renting a car while in Tuscany only.)

Thanks!

We were given about an hour to stop at Pisa during a tour of Italian cities. That gave more than enough time to get a gelato and see the shops, but did not allow quite enough time to get tickets and go up to the top of the tower. It was a very crowded summer day.

Have you checked to see what time the trains run and what hours the car rental office is open in Pisa? If the office closes for lunch, you might want to time your visit to Pisa to coincide with the lunch hour. You can tour the monuments and have a little lunch yourself, and then pick up the car as soon as the office reopens and head to Greve.

It would really be unfortunate to only leave time to see the leaning tower and not visit the Duomo. I think you need at least an hour at the site itself.

You can use www.mappy.com to figure out driving distances, but that of course doesn't tell you the difficulty of the drive. But if someone here doesn't give you answer about the dificulty, ask at the Slow Travel website.

It is always easy to get lost in Italy -- no matter where you pick up your car! I think by the time you got to another town by train, you'd have eaten up too much of the day (and probably not seen Pisa.)

Check the times available to climb the tower and go from there. We also found the baptistery and the duomo to be interesting. Two hours should be enough time to tour the three places, but it all revolves around your tower climbing time.

Hi take_time, yes, do see the duomo and baptistery, they are so beautiful!! I don't know how long it will take you to drive to Greve, we went on to Florence and never did find the autostrada so took the back roads (which was beautiful). Do count on getting "lost" while driving in Italy, lol, but just look at it as a way to see places you normally wouldn't see. Have a wonderful trip.
